• Knoppix (live cd)
• lnx-bbc (live cd)
• Linuxcare toolbox (live cd)
• Freesco (firewall)
• FreeBSD, OpenBSD

I recommend Mandriva or Kubuntu for newbies/average users, Gentoo for gamers/tweakers, Smoothwall for firewalls/gateways, and OpenBSD for servers.
