Slashdot Photo Contest 3 Questions

User Journal 43

OK, I was dumb and didn't explain what this is all about for the new people.

Basically, you send me a pic of yourself + your slashdot user id. I post up a buncha pictures (and all the aliases but in random order) and you try to guess who is who. Its a fun way to see the people behind the screen, so to speak.OK, I was dumb and didn't explain what this is all about for the new people.

Its been a ton of fun and most people that avoid playing usually regret it (seriously, I've had at least a half dozen people tell me they wished they played). Don't worry, we are all geeks and 99% of us look that way, so don't get embarassed or anything!

Anywho, the biggest question for the 3rd photo contest:
Should we do it like the first contest? Basically, I'll put all the pics up on an html page, you guys guess in comments in the journal.
Or should we do it like the second contest, where there is a program and you guess inside the website.

Obviously point one had a lot more community feel and some good conversations, but people guess easier and use other peoples answers when in doubt (especially people's answers that have played in the first two contests and have an idea of who is who).

Anyhow, you decide, and I'll get it started in a day or two!

I liked the first one better (1)

The second one didn't generate that much conversation. Since it's been a year and a half, nearly, since the second one, people might not remember. Might be a good idea to make an explicit request for those who know the answers to refrain from posting them. Also, take down the answers, if they are still up somewhere. Of course, it might be fun for those of us who know to post some disinformation... "Yup, Sol is six feet tall and a platinum blonde. That's where the nickname came from - platinum dragon, don't you know." :-)

Of course, bonus points for clever photos, such as ones that are recognizable for some obscure reason, like JTS with his face obscured, but standing next to his car or sitting at a desk with an apple on it. Or your Steelers jersey from one of them. IIRC, bethanie was a dead giveaway... Kiddo in the picture.

Since I am a dead giveaway, I'll just schoot a pic of my underwear :-))) *evil grin*

I'm for the first style too. Alas I won't have as much time to post as I used to.

Actually, I don't know what you look like, so you are not a dead giveaway. I'd only be able to recognize MonTemplar, Tuxette, and Interrobang with 100% accuracy.;)

jawtheshark (198669) | more than 9 years ago | (#11900394)

Did you ever try to google on "jawtheshark"? ;-)
Also, remember: on orkut most of us have a picture. How many people will forget to remove that one before the contest goes on?
I still don't know why so many people know what I look like. Heck, even in the first photo contest many people just knew "Hey, that guy must be jawtheshark".

That would be cheating. If I cheat, I'd go to hell. I don't want to go to hell. It burns like two-year-old mayonaise coating my digits.

Are you trying to tell me that there's a hell for Atheists? This, like, completely blows me. Whoa.

Dude, your mom was hot.

jawtheshark (198669) | more than 9 years ago | (#11907640)

I know... :-) Even now, she's still in a very good state for her age.

A few months ago we looked at baby films (you know how girlfriends are) and my mom looks hot on every single one... Daddy seemed to have taste.

I vote for the way it was done the first time. (1)

I really liked the way the first photo contest was run. Let us know how you want us to get the photos to you.

I vote the same.

I'm new to this whole thing, but the first way sounds more fun.

I never saw the 2nd photo contest... (1)

NeeNee3 (601111) | more than 9 years ago | (#11896667)

and I didn't enter the first one, but I did see how that one was set up. So, I vote for that one. I'll enter this one this time since I didn't join the previous two.

Just let me know how and when to submit the photo. :)

Nude, and right now. :-)

I vote for the format of the 3rd contest.

The subject is "photo contest", not "my imaginary friend".

The original and best! (1)

arb (452787) | more than 9 years ago | (#11896738)

Do it the same as the first one. It did have a much better community feel to it, people got into the spirit of things by using some clever deductive reasoning in order to ID the participants. Okay, some of the reasoning wasn't so clever either, but the hints and guesses were great. Plus there was plenty of trash-talk going on which was fun. ;-)

The second photo comp was less fun, IMNSHO, because there wasn't the same level of community involvement in the guessing phase.

Since the first one is winning... (1)

btlzu2 (99039) | more than 9 years ago | (#11897053)

and I wasn't here for either, I vote for the second, just to be a pain in the ass. :)

Combination (1)

Oculus Habent (562837) | more than 9 years ago | (#11898073)

I vote for both formats. It was nice having the comments to bounce around in the first format, and an actual voting interface was good in the second. Why not have a free-for-all JE for people to speculate and misdirect and spread rumors to0 each other - make sure you permit A/C posting, too, as that played a pretty big role in the first one - and then offer a voting system after a period of time. While that permits us to use others' guesses, I think the contest emphasis isn't on winning so much as having fun.

I'm in (1)

Alioth (221270) | more than 9 years ago | (#11898138)

Just post instructions on where to send them, and you can have mine.

bryanthompson (627923) | more than 9 years ago | (#11898865)

Ditto there. And why in the world didn't I have you on my friends list already, FK? I feel so left out :p

i liked the second, BUT... (1)

SolemnDragon (593956) | more than 9 years ago | (#11898159)

and i'm not trying to be a pain in the ass. I lkiked the second because i was tired and reading all those comments in the first was lengthy, as processes go.

That said, do it that way anyway, because you're totally right about community involvement.

Of course, when I compare and contrast this JE [slashdot.org] with this one [slashdot.org] ... *g*

<gratuitous_flattery>Hey, I predicted that you are a hawttt l'il dragon, and see, I woz right!

Cheers.

Ethelred

PS: Oh, drat, I forgot to close the tag. Well, you know what that means...syrupy flattery posts for the rest of my life. I'm cursed! I'm cursed!

My thoughts (1)

glh (14273) | more than 9 years ago | (#11898261)

I think the 3rd photo should resemble the first one. I think we had a record for # of comments in a JE :)

I also think there should be a thread for each picture in the comments so we can easily reply. (I think we did that the first time). It would also be fun to have Bethanie (or whoever did it last) to think up some categories for ranking like she did last time so we can all vote :)

Also, one other idea. After it runs about a week or two, we should allow "clues" to be posted where the original submitter can type in a clue. Just a thought.

Well this idea is OK... (1)

ellem (147712) | more than 9 years ago | (#11898411)

but what if we do one of the following:

Pictures of puppy skulls you've bashed
Pictures of lesions on /.ers genetalia
Pictures of the Q key on our keyboards
Pictures of the last SigOth you killed

If you weren't already on my friends list I'd be morbidly scared of you.

Only on slashdot could you try to start an innocent photo-guessing contest and wind up with people committing crimes against nature....

For shame, for shame.

The Second Law of Internet Discussions: given enough time, ANY thread, no matter how innocent, will eventually turn into a sadomasochistic orgy.

AAAAHHHH!!

No, really its the size of the photos that is scary. Now I'll be able to score one point on this "Who's who of Slashdot" picture quiz. I might be able to pick the dragon out too, unless she cheats and submits a picture older than a month.

Re:Well this idea is OK... (1)

tuxette (731067) | more than 9 years ago | (#11898543)

Pictures of puppy skulls you've bashed

Well, I don't bash puppy skulls. And since I'm in Norway, I could do the usual clubbing baby seals and harpooning whales and stuff, but everyone would know it was me...

Re:Well this idea is OK... (1)

ellem (147712) | more than 9 years ago | (#11898795)

You MONSTER!

some more details? (1)

elmegil (12001) | more than 9 years ago | (#11898535)

what kind of size requirement?

It might be worthwhile (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11898779)

To put more user names up there than pictures. Therefore it is less elimination than actual hard guesses. Of course too many more would make it very difficult. Three or Five might do the trick.

So... (1)

HokieSeas (560745) | more than 9 years ago | (#11899114)

...are we actually sending you pictures yet or are you still soliciting qusetions and comments on the ground rules?

how to send Josh the stuff? (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11899636)

I need an email address or something. Yes, I have slashdot account- just can't use it at this moment.

Proposal (0)

Anonymous Coward | more than 9 years ago | (#11902473)

Lots of people have seen lots of peoples fotos already. So let's do it in drag.

email? (1)

lithron (88998) | more than 9 years ago | (#11903072)

You don't have an email address listed. Where do we send pictures of our ugly mugs to?

i'll participate (1)

trmj (579410) | more than 9 years ago | (#11914459)

but you'll have to wait until after the weekend, as I don't have a camera, but will be at a party where one will exist to later embarass all it sees.
