OK, since I never get anything for doing the fotokon, I thought I'd ask some of the old gamers a question to see if someone can figure out an old game I played waaay back in middle school. Consider it payment for doing the fotokon ;-)

This would be back in the 386 era of computing. It was a space game, and I'm pretty sure the world "Star" existed in the title (yeah, narrowed it down to about 10,000 titles). Basically, you picked a crew, and spent cash training them. YOu had stuff like a captain, science officer, comm officer, etc... You got a ship, and you could go through space. If your science officer had mad skillz, you could tell when someone was around and was going to go into a 'melee mode' where you communicated and did battle. You could run into police, or aliens. Depending on your comm & sci officer skillz, you could communicate with various aliens and such. Some were peaceful, some were hostile. There was lasers and torpedos for battle. You could land on planets (well, your science officer would have to scan it and if it was inhabitable by humans, you'd survive the landing), and could search around on the planet. If it was inhabitable, you could wire back to HQ and they'd give you money for finding it. Sometimes you'd lose a crew member on the surface and would have to replace him (or her) with another crew member until you got back to hq and replaced the person.

That's about the extent I remember. It was completely open ended and really a blast to play. The graphics were blocks and nothing was really that clean (used to think it was star control 1, but the graphics in star control are too nice to be the game I'm thinking of). It was the closest game that resembled 'star trek' I've ever played. Meet aliens, discover new worlds, no missions, just exploration and stuff... anyone have a clue what it is??

  • I have this on my sega and I know it was released for the pc. What you describe is exactly how you play the one I have for Sega.
    • This may be right... although it is a bit prettier than I remember, I'm guessing the Sega version was 'pretty' and the pc version was 'clunky'... regardless, I'll give this a D/L tonight and see if its what I remember. Thanks!
    • Yes, I just dug deep with starflight and found that the PC version is exactly the game (has the aliens specifies the "Spemin" which I remember my friend calling the "Spermin" which we thought was hilarious..... keep in mind I was only in middleschool at the time).

      Gonna d/l and try that sucker out this weekend. Thanks for figuring it out (and quickly, too!) :-D
      • There was Starflight, and Starflight II. I don't remember which one had the Spemin (maybe both). I think that I have both of them at home, though they might be in a box just now. There's a chance that I have them zipped on my hard drive, though (I have 410G, just so I can keep this kind of crap).

        IIRC, the original Starflight was CGA graphics, so you might be thinking of SF2.
        • no no... I want those old CGA graphics...... I loved the play of it, I can deal with the crappy graphics.
          • I'll look on the HD. I'm fairly sure that I have the second one, but I'm not sure about the first one. IIRC, there was a copy protection device, a wheel that you had to align, then type in a value from one of several windows on the disc. I'm not sure if I have that, but you might be able to find one on the net.
      • I rented it from a video store eons ago-- they had the cartridge but no manual or anything. I had fun but had no idea what I was doing. A few years later I was at a used game store and they had it-- in the same condition. Just the cartridge. No box or manual. I bought it.

        Last year I had the sudden insight to google it and found walkthroughs, etc. I still haven't busted it back out and beat it yet. I ought to.

    • I think StarFlight is the one. Take a look and see if it is the one you're thinking of.

      That being said, it sounds somewhat similar to Star Control 2 which is one of the best games evar.

    I'm not sure. I do have the 8 CD "Abandonware Archive" at home and will give it a perusal tonight.
  • Though that game was way too fun (I think it got up to version 3). The game sounds really familiar, you might dig around here [abandonia.com] and see if any of the bazillion games match. If you find it you might even be able to download it for free.
  • Starfrogger, StarDigDug, StarCentipede, StarPacman, and StarStopPlayingGamesAndGetUnreadGoing. Was it any of those? ;-) (BTW, remember that you can post APIs for modules when you get to the coding phase and let some of use Java coders take some of the workload off you.)
