Journal Doctor O's Journal: Ten years on the net 4

Geez. Today I'm on the net for ten years, and I don't know what to say. If you knew me better, you'd know why this is actually hilarious.

Time to write a book, isn't it? I had 240.000 readers on CompuServe at a time when there were only around 600.000 users in Germany. I have been recognized by strangers while shopping groceries who wanted to talk about the stuff I wrote. I make a living off the net for 7 years. I've got lots of stories to tell.

How long have you people been online? Do you feel this, too?

  • I've been on for eleven and miss more things than I enjoy (paranoia.com was the shit.) It's been downhill since companies, lawyers, and cease-and-desist letters came along. I think people were a lot more creatively comfortable with it when they thought it was something they could keep separate from their lives. Watching how quickly twenty+ years of Usenet postings could be dredged out of archives and how cookies and online shopping can tie you together into one big searchable profile puts a damper on thi

In those days I was living in Hildesheim, but had to connect in Hannover, which cost an arm and a leg (since it was still the old Telekom state monopoly). We had horrendous phone bills -- easily 300-400 DM a month, sometimes more, even though we avoided using the phone as much as we could.

I also remember tearing my hair out trying to figure out why my (American) modem would hang up all the time. Nobody seemed to know the answer. Just by dumb luck I figured

You lucky bastards! I still have my 1200 baud external from my BBS days, (befor the dual 9600 baud modems, 2 phone lines, grapevine bbs software, 3-d ascii art, joke of the day, etc). Those were the days ...

(okay, so let's see who's gonna post the "you had modems ... we had to make do with rocks and hollow logs")

Rocks? Hollow logs? We had to make do with dirt, sonny, and we were damned lucky to have that!

        Cheers,
