Journal GQuon's Journal: Opera 8 to be released next week 4

Barring any last-minute faults found, Opera 8 final for Windows and Linux x86 will be available for download next week. The Mac version is still in beta, though.

(I have this from one of the Opera employees, who gave a talk at my campus yesterday.)

Opera 8 to be released next week

  • What new features does O8 bring to the table? Where does it exceed Firefox?
    • BTW, when it comes to Firefox and Opera, the Opera guy said, paraphrased: "Firefox is not our competitor. Well, yes, it's definately a competitor, but we compete with (want to take users from) MS Internet Explorer. The success of Firefox brings more attention to browsers, and that helps us as well. But certainly, yes, Firefox is a force to be reckoned with."
    • Here's the reply [slashdot.org]. I'm a bit tired from studying, and dacing the ParaPara, so I clicked on the wrong "reply".

I guess the new features will be summarised netaly at release. See the changelogs [opera.com] for details.

I'm not using the beta, nor Firefox, so I don't yet know. I'll download the final release though.

It seem that the most noticable will be voice interface, GMail integration, new preferences dialog, SVG support. And security and "minor niggle" changes. One that I welcome is an option to have the transfer window appear in the background instead of in front.

If you think the system is working, ask someone who's waiting for a prompt.

Working...
