Journal heliocentric's Journal: firefox downloading problem 5

I checked the FAQ, I searched a bit on google, and I posted to the mozilla/firefox forum, but I still haven't found anything. Thus, I turn to the JE community.

Downloading, use of shortcuts (windows)

This seems to be a problem with the newer mozilla/firefox releases, but I'm not sure when it crept in.

I have a shortcut on my desktop to a repository for some images. When I'm in Mozilla/Firefox, if I click to save a file or an image and I navigate to my desktop and I pick the shortcut I am asked if I want to overwrite this shortcut with the file - it does not follow the link to the destination folder/directory.

I tried this process in IE, and it follows the shortcuts just fine. I'm not sure where I can enable or disable such a "feature" in mozilla.

Thoughts?

  • Firefox 1.0.2 here (yeah, I'm not up to date... sue me) and it doesn't have the problem. Apart from that, ehm, I have no idea.
    • I was in 1.0.2 and it was doing that for me, and I upgraded to 1.0.3 and it persisted.

      I windows on a dual boot linux box and I put it on the windows side to experiment (just there for gaming, really) and it worked there, so I'm suspecting it is a windows local configuration problem, but just what, I'm not sure.

      Thanks for checking.
  • FF1.0.3 - Windows 2K Pro.
  • It wants to save all the files to my desktop (Netscape, bless its pointy little head, does not do this), and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to change it. Since I'm frequently downloading stuff that I'm not just stuffing into a generic catch-all directory (and because moving stuff off the desktop is tedious), I'd like this fixed. Ideas?

    Keep in mind that I haven't been using it long enough to really know my way around, so forgive me in advance if this is easy to fix.
    • Tools -> Options -> Downloads.

      First group of radio buttons is:

      () Ask me where to save each file
      () Save all files to this folder [drop down with desktop as default]

      Just change your radio button and you should be back to the way you're used to downloading.
