Breaking CAPTCHA: Please Hold [Edit x2]

User Journal 27

EDIT: It has come to my attention that not everyone receives a CAPTCHA request. I believe this is users with Excellent karma. Can anyone confirm?

EDIT 2: I have three confirmations from +2 posters that they did not get CAPTCHA requests. I have accounts with Terrible, neutral, positive, and good karma, plus AC. All received CAPTCHA.

That's okay. We're still working on cracking the new CAPTCHA. The source will be released. Crapflooder, please stand by. The upgraded shitstorm.pl script will also be released to gh-sts.com and, possible, sourceforge. If this account is anonymized the way sllort's was, the URL will be:

http://www.gh-sts.com/shitstorm2.pl

To find the code in Google, search for the phrase
"shitstorm reloaded".

I have yet to see a CAPTCHA. Those are preview ads or something, right?

I'm assuming you mean you're having to complete captchas to post comments? Confirm, I'm excellent k, I see no captchas.

I have a troll account (1)

It's got terrible karma. I am seeing the captcha. But with this account and T4D, no captcha. (Even thought I'm still banned. Hah!) Ban this, Pudgefacker.

I've got another account that I've never used (it'll come in handy if I'm still hanging around here next election season), but am hesitant to log into it to check, as I'd like to keep it completely anonymous with regard to this account. No particular reason I suppose, but once they're linked, I can't undo that.

Slashdot uses captchas? (1)

BandwidthHog (257320) | more than 9 years ago | (#12620159)

News to me, and as you can see, I do my fair share of posting.

I just checked with a fairly new user with only 'Positive' karma and she's now getting them, yet didn't a few days ago.

I see you'll be over the 10,000 mark sometime this week ...

As long as I fill my day with commentary as relevant and useful as this, it should be no problem.

Funny, fwiw I've not seen one.

Yeah, but 79% of mine are within the last twelve months. I'm working on it, oh wise and ancient master.

Haven't seen one yet (1)

tomhudson (43916) | more than 9 years ago | (#12620704)

Sorry, haven't seen one yet. If I ever do, I will be royally pissed ...

Re:Haven't seen one yet (1)

Deamos (108051) | more than 9 years ago | (#12622586)

I've been seeing them from time to time.

Oddly (slashdot bug maybe?) I don't always get them when posting a reply.

Just wait around long enough, you'll see one sooner or later.

tomhudson (43916) | more than 9 years ago | (#12622745)

When did all this start, anyway? I've posted over 100 comments in the last week or so, and haven't seen one yet ...

Re:Haven't seen one yet (1)

Deamos (108051) | more than 9 years ago | (#12622950)

For me? I started seeing them in the morning yesterday. I had posted a comment late night sunday night and didn't get one so it must have been rolled out sometime in the overnight hours.

Maybe your karma is good enough that you won't seem them.

Re:Haven't seen one yet (1)

tomhudson (43916) | more than 9 years ago | (#12623137)

Could be - I've had excellent karma for years ... :-)

Re:Haven't seen one yet (1)

Deamos (108051) | more than 9 years ago | (#12623751)

Yeah, I don't think I've ever had excellent karma.

Then again I've never posted in main page stories very much, and don't read them much anymore. :)

Re:Haven't seen one yet (2, Informative)

the_mad_poster (640772) | more than 9 years ago | (#12623285)

Users below excellent karma see the CAPTCHA request (although with the new moderation changes, they might as well make it users with Good karma...). Also, like most CAPTCHA systems, you only have to post the CAPTCHA answer once per session if you're logged in. ACs are required to post the CAPTCHA every time they post, however.

Re:Haven't seen one yet (1)

Deamos (108051) | more than 9 years ago | (#12623773)

I have had to post a captcha with *every* post I have made today and all but one that I can remember yesterday.

My karma is listed as good.

This is just ghey IMO.

I was about to ask what this solves but I know the answer already. :)

Oh. Nice. So now not only do we haev the inconvience of typing in the captcha, the flood protection is still in its two minute effect. Weee.

Re:Haven't seen one yet (1)

the_mad_poster (640772) | more than 9 years ago | (#12623892)

Yea, well..... it's only a matter of time until myself or someone else breaks this CAPTCHA scheme. I already have a reliable system for mapping the letter pixels to text without most of the noise. The last thing I need to break through is really just going to be a matter of running a series of brute force character operations. I suspect I can have this CAPTCHA broken shortly, and identifying letters in-memory in a reasonable amount of cpu time.

Re:Haven't seen one yet (1)

Deamos (108051) | more than 9 years ago | (#12623963)

That amuses me.

So all the captcha does is penalize those of us who are "good" users.

The couple times I have posted trollish comments they've been AC.

Most of the time I dont' visit the main page, so I don't do that much.

Stupid crap, oh well. It'd be nice if I didn't have to enter one every time I posted though.

Also Excellent karma (1)

M.C. Hampster (541262) | more than 9 years ago | (#12623267)

No CAPTCHA.

excelent karma rocks. (1)

kesuki (321456) | more than 9 years ago | (#12626607)

on the old,old number scale my karma would be about 210 or so, pretty pathetic that I know what my karma would be, even though it was capped to 50 for the longest time, and hasn't displayed a number at all in ages.

none of the capatchas but then again my account is also a low uid... but we're going to assume it checks karma not uid.

excellent, no captcha (1)

taped2thedesk (614051) | more than 9 years ago | (#12631416)

i had no clue what you were talking about at first... never seen the captcha. damn my useless excellent karma!
