Journal damn_registrars's Journal: You Want Impeachment? Knock Yourselves Out 6

These two numbers show why impeachment talk is trouble for the GOP

What I find most interesting about the impeachment coverage, though is that nobody is bringing up the biggest thing that makes impeachment a total losing proposition for the GOP:

They can't remove Obama before his term is up

Even if they started the impeachment process this afternoon, it would take far more than 2 years to get all the way through it. Republicans getting on board with impeachment now or before election 2016 are writing their own obituaries.

  • ...President Biden.

They'd be giving Joe the advantage of incumbency in the 2016 election and if they didn't get Obama out before the middle of January of 2015, Biden would be eligible for two full terms plus the remaining 2 years of Obama's second term.

    • It is not exactly clear that Joe Biden's rodeo clown act would be relatively less talented than Pres'ent Obama's.
If your argument is that Biden is less of a spineless coward, and therefore more likely to make war on the Semi-Conscious Liberation Army thugs streaming out of Bulungi, then your case is not entirely without merit.
The better anti-impeachment case, I feel, is the one that says Obama's almost seemingly stoned detachment from reality, cruising around scooping up cash from rubes while the world bu

      Perhaps my point was unclear.

Even if the GOP started impeachment this afternoon, they would not be able to remove the president before the end of his term, the process simply takes too long. There is no reason to fear the rise of a President Biden in the wake of removing Obama as it is not possible to remove Obama before January 2017. If you doubt that, take a look at the timeline of Watergate [wikipedia.org]. Once the senate finally started a hearing it took over a year before Nixon resigned on his own - and formal

  • It's about making the President and his party look bad to voters. There won't be any impeachment, only talk of impeachment.

    • It's about making the President and his party look bad to voters.

It's questionable whether that will succeed for any voters who were not already die-hard conservatives (who would have voted GOP regardless of whether or not any impeachment ever occurs). Voters will take note of the fact that congress is wasting their time on this when they could be doing actual work. If the GOP is not trying to hand over full control of Washington to the democrats they should really give up on the impeachment bit and get back to work.

Or, at least, get back to writing more silly bills

I not only can't argue with that, I'd say the efforts won't sway anyone. But the tea party has never been rational.
