It's becoming increasingly clear that Slashdot's comment system is due for an upgrade. Here are a few ideas I have for it's improval.

The comment moderations are a little too generic. I say give a much wider range than -1 to 5. At very least make it -2 to 10. I'd personally perfer it go from -10 to 100. For this to be feasable mod-points would have to be given out much more often, but I don't see that as a problem.

Next I would take advantage of Slashdot's already built in friend system. You should be able to see both a friends' score and an overall score for comments. So you could setup your account to only take into account your friends moderations, or do a combination of the two. People constantly disagree on proper moderations, so this would help I think.

Lastly, I'd add a whole lot more comment labels. You should have an orthoginal design of sorts. If a post can be rated "funny" then it should also be possible to rate it "unfunny". Insightful? How about Uninformed? Stuff like that... How about a "zealot" mod option? Or with things like the GNAA around maybe it's time for a "Spam" label? I'm sure there's lot of new possibilities...

    Identifying who moderated a post is a bad idea. Do we really want groups of trolls knowing who is modding them down?

    • Well, as far as the trolls go...there are different sorts, and some are entertaining and interesting to read, while something that's just Spam is not. I browse at -1 so I can see everything because lots of times, things get modded incorrectly.

      As far as the indentification, you wouldn't know exactly who voted for what, just that one of your friends was one of them.

        There are a lot of posts that only receive one mod point. There are also a lot of posts that receive multiple mod points, but only one descriptor. In those situations, you're going to know exactly how your friend modded the post.

        For example, if two moderators assign -1 Troll to a post, and it lets you know your friend moderated that post, you know your friend moderated the post
        • Well, it's not perfect...but it's just some ideas. And with the first idea there would be tons of moderation points flying around so it'd be a little harder to keep track of ;)
  • The -1 to 5 range is fine.

    If they used the friend's score, that would only work well if they gave everyone unlimited "private moderation" for every comment other than their own, which isn't trivial to code. Yes, it would be cool but don't look for it soon unless you want to write the code and coordiate the beta test. People using regular mod points should still do it anonymously.

      Suppose I and everyone else were allowed to moderate any and all posts, but this was done in a parallel, independent way from the regular moderations.

      With enough intelligence in the system, I could ask the system to guess how I would moderate a given comment based on the recommendations of everyone else who moderated similarly to me. This could be done "blind," i.e. not connected to the friend/foe mechanism.

  • Another possible technique is to encourage moderators to moderate above 5 and below -1, but limit the displayed score to the -1..5 range.

    For posts with a less than 5 moderations, just do what you do now.

    For posts with more than 5 moderations, the scale is -5 to -5, or, if you prefer, 0 to 10 and subtract 5. 8 positives and 2 negatives? That's 80% of the way along the scale, you are at +3, not at +5 as you likely would today.

    Negative scores below -1 would be shown as -1, unless a registered user reading
