Journal Abm0raz's Journal: My feelings on Katrina 15

(and the southern coasts in general)

MOVE!

My donation to Katrina Relief Fund is a giant map of the United States with a GIANT FRICKIN' ARROW pointing north.

Guess what? Tennessee doesn't get hurricanes. Move there! Neither does Kentucky, Illinois, West Virginia, Indiana or Pennsylvania. By the time the storms get to those states, they are just long thunderstorms. Hell the worst most of those states see is an occasional drought, a rare tornado, and rarely a blizzard.

But Abm0raz, the weather's so nice here! It's nice 360 days out of the year, if you like that "sunny and warm" crap (I personally don't), but 5 days out of the year, your house blows down, you lose everything you own, 10% of your neighbors die, and your whole world goes to hell. But that's a reasonable price to pay for great weather, right?

So, with that in mind, I will put my money where my mouth is. I will donate to a charity who's sole purpose is to move people from Hurricane Alley (FL and anybody in coastal GA, AL, MS, LA, TX, SC, or NC) north to a safer area. Otherwise, I will continue to donate my crudely hand drawn map with the giant red arrow.

ps. Yeah, I know it's rough, but you can't tell me for a moment that people who live in a BOWL-SHAPED city on the coast that is BELOW SEA LEVEL didn't see that this could have been a very real possibility?

pps. For those that think I'm a hypocrite, I broke off my engagement several years back because I did not want to move to Florida with her. I don't want to deal with the weather. (fun fact: Florida has more hurricane, lightning AND tornado damage (each seperately) than any other state in the union.)

ppps. True to my word, anyone from that area that needs a place to stay, I can house 1-2 people. They just gotta get here. Hit me up at abmoraz at gmail dot com.

pppps. Feel free to comment. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. If you disagree with me, I can handle that.

  • But I'm not sure the north is quite ready for that kind of influx of hicks.

    *ducks*
    • Aren't the roots of the Cajun population in Quebec? Send them all back waaaaay north...
    • You are very mistaken if you don't think the North has it's own 'hicks.' Hicks are everywhere, they just take on a slightly different appearence in each region. So perhaps the North isn't ready for the influx of _that kind ok_ hick.
  • I'd like to see the housing laws down there require everyone build well anchored pyramids, domes, or even boxes, but they have to withstand cat 4 or 5 huricanes. No trailer homes allowed unless it can drive north and evacuate when the time comes.

Modern construction in CA has to stand up to 7 or 8.0 earthquakes, the South needs to be just as responsible.

But if anyone builds a bomb shelter on the seashore there and it still gets flooded, don't you dare expect the feds to bail you out, water or money-wise.
    • The problem wasn't the houses withstanding the cat 5 hurricane, it was the levy's. The levy's were only designed to withstand cat 3 hurricane's. When Katrina was done with New Orleans it's wasn't that bad, it got horrible when the levy's broke and the flooding happened.
      • I was thinking of the entire vulnerable coastline. Biloxi is aparently destroyed. Every time a hurricane comes through the region it seems to cause 6 billion in damage. At least the Northridge, 89 Bay Area, and 71 LA quakes were considerably less frequent, but no more costly.

What does General Electric have to do with hurricane alley?
  • LA hasn't been hit bad since the 50s, that's like saying don't live in Las Angeles cause the big one might come. Or don't live in Atlanta cause it might be raised again.

Though granted most of the Mountain Time Zone is pretty empty, I guess we don't _need_ the coast aside from shipping.
    • Heck, even Toronto had a pretty nasty hit from a hurricane in the '50s (Hazel).

(Hmm. addd that to the list too: Don't live in the '50s)
  • A lot of people didn't realy have a choice about where they were living. They were there because their job was there or family or whatever. The kids certainly had no choice about being there.

For all of you who think it is so easy to move, are you willing to move 500 miles or more from where you are now? This goes double for any of you who have longstanding family ties to your area.

I'd like to point out that one of the largest losses of life during a Hurricane was one that hit Rhode Island.
