So Does the Upcoming Nominee Deserve An Up or Down Vote...

  • ... the Senate might vote "no" before anyone is named.
  • If it is indeed Alito, [washingtonpost.com] I worry that my worst fears [slashdot.org] may soon be realized. Alito may not be a nutjob, but he could be the one that tips the scale on RvsW.

    • It is Alito. These are exciting times, because this is the beginning of the end of the Republican party. As soon as they overturn abortion rights, they won't be able to get elected dog catcher.

I like the idea of the beginning-of-the-end, but is the price worth it?

    • Your fears are realized, and Scalito IS a nut job. Women must get permission from their husbands for abortions.

Isn't that just the most insane thing? I'm continually amazed at the way Conservatives want to control women and think they have the right to do so. Because that's what this fundamentally is - a way to control the lives of 50% of the population.

        • It isn't just women, it is anyone who isn't a rich white man. The entire Conservative agenda is about turning the clock back to 1899 when 'people knew their place'.

Agreed - the comment about women was simply to show how easily 50% of the population can be directly affected by a bad law.

    • Nope, Roe v. Wade (and Casey as well) is still safe. There are currently 5 votes for it on the court: Kennedy, Souter, Bryer, Ginsberg, and Stevens. Also it is unknown how Roberts is likely to vote. While he doesn't support abortion, he seems very hesitant to overturn prior decisions, especially ones that have been repeatedly re-affirmed.

        I hope you're right - I'm not sure I trust Kennedy, though.

He was one of the 5 votes that upheld Casey [findlaw.com] as well as writing the court opinion along with O'Connor and Souter. If anything he has gotten a bit more liberal since then. Some think that with O'Connor gone he may move to her position ideologicly on the court.

Then again he did side with Rehnquist, White, and Scalia in Webster [findlaw.com], so I suppose you are correct in not fully trusting him on the central question of Roe [findlaw.com]. Then again he does seem even more disin
          • Thanks for the links, I'll read over those in the next few days.

Yet I remain steadfast in my belief that the right to reproductive choice is entitled to the full protection afforded by this Court before Webster. And I fear for the darkness as four Justices anxiously await the single vote necessary to extinguish the light.

That quotation sends chills down my spine.

            • That's like, what, two votes away from overturning your right to kill babies? And you're worried about Kennedy? Do you liberals even bother to think before spouting out nonsense?

Heaven forbid there are two or three people on the court who actually uphold the Constitution instead of the liberal agenda.

And it's hilarious that you think putting an anti-abortionist on the court would be a slight to "future generations". You are a true idiot.

This is the sort of wacko over-reaction that makes you right-wing types sound like lunatics. Keep taking things to the extreme, and keep wondering why the majority doesn't see things the way you do.

                Dope.
