Journal laughingcoyote's Journal: Anarchocapitalism debate 2

I recently got into a very interesting debate with a self-styled "anarchocapitalist". I've read von Mises' works, and to me, they seem so full of inconsistency, supposition, and half-baked ideas so as to be totally unrealistic. But what do you think? Can anyone out there coherently defend this philosophy? Does anyone else agree with me? I put this here rather then linking directly so as not to spam up a public discussion with offtopic posts (well, more then has happened, anyway.) Your thoughts?

  • I've toyed with the idea of anarcho-capitalism in my head. It's an interesting idea, and I think there's a lot to draw from it that can be applied to government.

    For example, I think the FDA could be done away with in favor of a few laws regulating the existence and behavior of companies that issue permission to use their trademark as a stamp certifying that a food has certain properties.     • Oh, I'm not against it in principle or anything. There are plenty of areas in which private, competitive enterprise really -is- the most efficient way to accomplish something. I just get sick of the "everything should be privatized" mentality-there -are- some things which really are public resources, and therefore should be managed for the good of the public at large. There are also things like roads, police and fire services (I add health care here, but that's an entirely different debate), and so on, that
