Journal nmb3000's Journal: Slashdot Moderation at Work - Part II 5

So perhaps it wasn't the most Slashdot-friendly thing to say, but I said it anyway. What do I get in payment? Some dumbass with mod points decided that my comment was soooo inflammatory that they used their points marking my last 5 comments "Overrated". I suppose I should be flattered that I got the troll to spend all their points on little old me.

In the end they accomplished nothing, so I'm not sure if I really should be irritated. The only thing that bugs me about it is that while I've had Excellent karma for over a year now and I metamoderate on a regular basis, I haven't seen mod points for the last 6 months, yet morons like this apparently still get them. I suppose it comes down to hoping that there is some system (there certainly should be) that monitors moderations and takes some action if a user uses all their points on negative moderations. This goes double for Overrated mods which bypass review by metamoderators.

Oh well.

Slashdot Moderation at Work - Part II

  • I just had 5 points expire yesterday. I could have helped fix it.

The last time I had this happen to me, I was pretty sure who had done it (the other participant in a recent heated discussion I had). I fired an e-mail to CmdrTaco (he actually does give a shit about that sort of thing, or at least he did).

I was right about who had done it, and that person lost their moderation privileges.
  • I make it a point to metamod once per 24 hours. I tend to post a few times per month. I generally get to moderate once a week.

Given your SID #, I'm shocked you even get the opportunity to moderate.

There is such a thing as posting too much. Do that, and you will get pushed down the moderation queue.

The sinister allusions you give to "Overrated" is overrated. Overrated is like Funny. It will affect the post's visibility, but its not supposed to affect karma. If modders are using it, thinking its a perfe
    • Interesting. I've actually been given mod points quite a few times, more so when my karma first went to Excellent about a year or so ago. I also thought it was kinda odd, but figured that maybe I'd misunderstood the rules about the top few % of UIDs and modding. It's just been the last several months that I haven't seen any points.

Posting too much, eh? :) Didn't think that would have been a problem. In fact, I would have thought the opposite, that an active member of the "community" would be given the ch
      • The moderation document talks about trying to find the "average" Slashdotter a couple of times (logins, pageviews, etc). I wouldn't be surprised if the same went for posts: it drops the highs and lows. My SID is higher than yours and I get mod points a few times a month during the periods I'm active.

People keep saying that "Overrated" does not get Meta Moderated. I could swear I'd seen one, but I haven't since I first read that. If I ever do again I'm taking a screenshot for sure.

        Of course I'm most li

There was major tweaking done to the moderation engine last year. It might have been overly permissive in letting vocal newbs moderate. Since you've been here for a year, can't call you a newb, but believe me, from an account point of view, you haven't been here long. As far as I know, there is no overt moderation discrimination based on UID. Its an automated algorithm to favor
