Journal coleopterana's Journal: Writing in Slashdot?

I just got around to creating a Slashdot account, which will hopefully remind me to read Slashdot more often then I've bothered to in the past. When I saw the function for a journal entry, I thought it might be a good place to jot down an concept that has become the norm too much in the recent past that bothers me. Since when did we all decide that we would define 'geek' or 'dork' by the amount of arcane computer knowledge that someone possessed? I'm biased, naturally, because I mostly gather that sort of knowledge in a practical environment, just what I need to know when I need to know it. I've always been a researcher in the more laboratory science areas, in just about all of them to date, and I find the arrogance of computer programmers and sysadmins to be irritating, like my advanced knowledge just isn't good enough for them. It's become, intellectually, a competition to be in the least publicly accessibly field possible, and I suppose as someone who also has the need to focus on making deliverables publicly available in many ways, that's just plain idiotic. Meh. It bore writing down to think about later.
