Large unknown projects take a lot of time, trial and error and final tweaking. They may have been able to write the app in Perl in "one line" :) once all that was done. I don't see the surprise factor here.

  These guys were Java experts and Ruby novices. Ruby is cool anyways. I've been playing with it for a while...
