Journal BarbaraHudson's Journal: I'm back. 39

I can see well enough to use a computer again, which came as a welcome surprise. Huge thanks to the retinal surgeons who patched my left eye back into some semblance of working order, and to the work over the last several years by the team of ophthalmologists and tech assistants who helped preserve much of the sight in my right eye.

It's been an interesting experience so far, and one that I have learned a lot from. I've been told that the betting money would be on my retinas being relatively stable for the next two-three years, though the vitrectomy was such an insult to the lens that I can expect to need it to be replaced in the next year or so.

The more things change, the more they stay the same ... especially here on /., where APK wasted no time claiming that various anonymous posters were me. Comments like this one must be driving him even nuttier - will he be accusing that poster of being me?

Only on slashdot :-)

Unfortunately, I never expected to use a computer again, so I don't have the passwords to my old accounts (neither my original one, nor the one I created with a gender-appropriate nic after I was outed as a transsexual). I'm sorry for the inconvenience. Just like I'm sorry that I wasn't able to keep people up to date before falling off the face of the net.

There are still plenty of challenges ahead, both near-term and long-term. And plenty of unanswered questions that I will do my best to clear up. I was going to do it elsewhere and just post links, but really, this is home (despite the beta crap).

  • The audience here is a bit smaller these days. I'm still here.
    • And believe me, I'm glad to hear from you! The support I've received from slashdot users ... I cannot understate how important it was, and continues, to be.
      • I tried emailing you when you stopped posting alltogether. You know to get some news, but left and right I saw you were still active, and thus still alive.
        • Sorry. I ran into a LOT of problems, from lost email accounts to lost passwords, etc., when I couldn't keep things going. It really sucked, and part of that suckage (a really big part, incidentally) was losing contact with my friends on slashdot. You know how it is ... "slashdot - come for the tech, stay for the trolls" :-)
          • That's fine. When I saw you were active with trying to save your neighbourhood, I knew you were fine and hadn't lost your bite (which is a compliment from a shark, isn't it?).

I still find slashdot entertaining, due to the humour, the culture, etc... I just don't learn much from it any more. Back in the early days, there was always something new to be learned about technology, open source, computer security. I think both slashdot and I have evolved. I simply know more now, and slashdot might have gone d

Well, the computer field has been pretty much commoditized, so that's taken a lot of the fun out of it. The old ways and the old hardware actually made you *think* to achieve anything significant. Everything gave a sense of accomplishment, of self-improvement, of learning something new. And everyone involved was an enthusiast, in the sense that they were enthusiastic about what they were doing.

Now? Who cares about the language-fad-of-the-month? Bugs are no longer news-worthy

  • I don't know what the wait was supposed to accomplish, but I was finally able to put you on my friends list today.
    • I noticed that - there were some bugs that were preventing my from friending people for a few days, and I'm NOT using beta ...

Anyway, life is good again, I was a bit down in the dumps for not succeeding in helping a relative but I've bounced back (though I still feel a bit guilty about being unable to fix something that was inevitable from the get-go ... but I did my best over the last 4 months), and I'll probably take a bit of time to go through my old accounts and re-friend my friends.

      And of course, hav

      • If it was only a bug, it was a very peculiar one at that. I was able to pretty much declare relationships with any other ID during the time when I could not do so with you. I was wondering if perhaps they intentionally changed the code so as to make it impossible to pick a relationship with an account that is less than X days old?

A more interesting bug, IMHO, was seen here on the front page very recently [slashdot.org]. That article exceeded the character limit for an article title when it first hit the front page (a
