Journal FortKnox's Journal: Of trophies and rings and thumbs 15

OK, don't close this tab just yet. I normally put a tag when I'm talking about football so everyone that doesn't care can avoid... but this one is special... because, odds are, you are either going to attend a superbowl party, or are goign to watch the game for some reason (commercials, most likely). So if you are doing any of that, please read on... for our foreign /.'ers and those without TV or friends/family that don't do the sports thing, feel free to close now...

Now, lets talk about the goods...
This is all I ask... since you have to sit and watch the game, root for a team. Root for those Pittsburgh Steelers. Go on, it won't hurt you (unless you live in the pacific northwest, but you can still root for them!). And now here is why:
The Pittsburgh Steelers have always had an elite team that usually goes to the post season and does well.
They haven't won a superbowl since 1980, and they haven't GONE to the superbowl since 1995.
This year seemed to be the downfall. They came in #2 of their division (to the Cincinnati Bengals), and barely made it into the post season (last spot... the #6 seed).
The #6 seed had to play the #3 seed (those Cincinnati Bengals). Rarely has the #6 seed won. Well, the Steelers did win.
The #6 seed then had to play the #1 seed. The #6 never has beaten a #1 seed before in the history of the NFL. The Indianapolis Colts where the #1 seed and pretty much the big favorite not only to GO to the superbowl, but capable of taking out anyone that got there.
The Steelers manhandled the Colts in the first half, and due to some horrific officiating (this isn't coming from my biased opinion... the NFL director of officiating called out one particular bad call and said it was the wrong call), the Colts kept in the game until their kicker shanked a makable field goal during the final seconds of the game.
The #2 seed (Denver) and #4 seed (Patriots) played. Denver surprisingly dominated the game, and Tom Brady and the Patriots pretty much imploded. So the Broncos had taken out the champs and looked like THEY could go to the big game. The Steelers went in and dominated the entire game.
So the steelers, as the last place in the playoffs, took out the first, second, and third place. They were underdogs (even by vegas bettors) the entire way (even like 19 point underdogs in Indy, which was absurd).
Seattle? #1 seed in the other conference. So the #6 seed Steelers are taking on the #1 seed Seattle... and the Steelers are favored by 4.
Jerome Bettis, who grew up in Detroit, future hall of famer, all around nice guy is getting old. It was a long time for him to decide to return for one last chance to play in the big game. Now he's in it, and its in his home town. The media has already been over it too much, but its very fairytale-like.

Anywho, I'm just a big Steelers fan looking for others to join in the excitement when the Steelers walk away with the trophy.

There are plenty of seats on the bandwagon... feel free to climb aboard and sit down! The big superbowl chant for the Steelers is "One for the Thumb" which refers back to the 70s when the Steelers won 4 superbowls (4 superbowl rings, so the fifth ring would fit on the thumb).

Oh, and Em... WTF is this talk about the Bears nabbing Randle El from us? The dude isn't a #2 receiver, he's just a fantastic slot receiver. Word in Pittsburgh is to get Quincy Morgan to take the split end spot, and return El back to the slot where he is better...

  • As a Ravens fan, I absolutely ABHOR the Steelers when they come to town, but I'd rather have it go to someone in our division.

Flavor of the week dude. You know how it is. I wouldn't read much into it.

He'd do well in the slot for the Bears, though.

I have a hard time rooting for Seattle, so your Steelers get my vote I guess. Bettis needs to ride off into the sunset win o

    No... no I'm not.

I would have appreciated the [football] tab so I could skip it like the others. I couldn't care less about professional sports.
  • I picked against your Steelers in each of my playoff picks and they won each time. So do I pick against them again and keep the trend going, or risk picking them and throwing off their karma. I don't know what to do witht his game just anyway, so you still have time to weigh in;-)
  • But only because Seattle gave the world Starbucks, and I hate Starbucks.

Also you're the first person to ask me to have an opinion about this Super Bowl thing.
  • Seattle is gonna trounce those steel making weenies like they were just some punks at a night club. ;)
    • Agreed. Nobody on the east coast is giving the Seahawks the credit they deserve. They are an awesome team this year.

Trust me, Seattle fans know the difference between a bad team and an awesome team.

      ^_^

  • You don't really want me to root for the Steelers.
Any team I root for loses.

I purposely didn't watch the championship game so they would win. I didn't want the donko's to win by my accidently getting excited about the steelers.

I'm a sports jinx. I swear i'm the reason for the Raiders last few crappy seasons and for Steve Bartman.
  • I'm a Dolphins fan, but since the whole family is from Pittsburgh, the Steelers have always been my #2 team.

Unfortunately, ever since I started watching the Super Bowl (Buffalo's first loss of many, I believe), the team I root for loses.

    So I'm worried.
