Journal GreyWolf3000's Journal: Karma Whoring 4

Karma Whoring is not a Bad Thing (TM). It is sort of like those high-school summer jobs or an apprenticeship--doing the hard annoying crap work before you get to the "next level." The only stipulation should be "no lame karma whoring."

I have seen Karma Whores simply provide 3 google links and get away with it, simply by admitting that they were KW'ing. Don't be lame, people. Try and cut and paste a decent amount of information and post it--not too short, and not so long that you're clearly not intending anyone to read it. If you're mirroring an article, great! Just don't do it off of your home cable modem, since it will soon get /.ed as well.

If you admit that KW'ing is not a bad thing, and you strive to do the grunt work and lay out useful information to the community, you deserve to get rewarded. After all, somebody's got to do it. The end result? A better, more well-informed discussion.

  • It seems the longer that I've been using slashdot the less I comment... I remember back when I first started using slashdot I would post all the time and an actualy GOOD discussion came out of it, whereas now the majority of comments are marked down (ie. redunadant, karma whore, etc). While I agree that those who merely slap a few links they ran off google are equivelant to the people who wash your windshield as you wait at the light, they do perform a service (though mostly unnecessary and always with something in return).

I've been wondering, with the /. community as large as it is, do you have any ideas to make the discussions more followable? I know that at work if a new story pops up, by the time I've RTFA and come back, there are already 50+ comments posted. So now I try and read those and see if I can't add onto their discussion.. i don't know.. i've been wondering about this for a while (doesn't show or anything...;) )

    • How about a 5 minute grace period between when an article is posted and when discussion begins? I agree with your first point--now that I have excellent karma the incentive to post has declined, and every post puts me at risk to lose that bonus. Not that it matters all that much, but there is no real desire to actually contribute.
    • btw how do i mod these posts up? my threshold is at 3 and i have to do some extra clicking to get them to show up
