All the ice you'd need, and nobody with the technology to make really good vodka. :( Still, this book with three authors covered all that and more. It's the best example, imo, of a reverse fanfiction - it's pros writing about fans. Name that reference.

Ah, Fallen Angels. An interesting peek into the sci-fi fan world, for someone who loves sci-fi, but has never made it to a convention. And, it's available for free reading at Baen's Free Library [baen.com].

Yup. I've met a good chunk of the fen mentioned in the book. They are all real people. Fun fun read, but as I say, it's kind of a reverse fanfic - a SF novel written about fandom by professional writers, so it's very heavy on the inside references.

By the way, pick a convention that is heavy on guests and light on the dealers tables, and go! You'll have fun, get introduced to a whole bunch of neat authors, get to meet some of your favorites... the non-'dealer's cons' are a good time even for mild fans. And if you enjoy it, stick around after the fan closes and look for the parties - you might wind up in a Filk room or debate finer points of a novel - with the author.
