Censorship 4

The American Decency Association put me on their mailing list after I did the reports on library censorware in Holland, Mich. The American Decency Association put me on their mailing list after I did the reports on library censorware in Holland, Mich.

So every few days I get something in my inbox from repressed people protesting Howard Stern, Cosmo at the supermarket or a not-sufficiently- Family Video. The latest big push of theirs is the boycott of Abercrombie and Fitch for peddling porn and selling thongs for girls.

Today's mail included this letter from Bill Johnson, the President of the ADA.

A PERSONAL NOTE:

How do we get convictions? Can we instill them in others?

I can come into a room and see an image on a television that is exhibiting a scantily clad actor and get immediately indignant while a group of people (young or old) can be sitting viewing it and see nothing wrong. Why is that?

I believe it is because of a strong sense of right and wrong - Biblical convictions. [...]

Honestly, over the years I have wondered why there aren't people all around us who experience righteous indignation over sexual images and themes that increasingly dominate the various "entertainment" choices.

I care deeply when I see an Abercrombie & Fitch catalog using sexual images of older teenagers to hit the hot bottoms of other teenagers but I wonder why there is so little outrage from other Christians around me?

I'm pretty sure he meant to write "hot buttons." Guess he had something else on his mind.

I can't find records of these emails on their website, so just for posterity's sake here's the full text of it. I've done mild editing to make it fit with Slashdot's lameness filters...

Where did they come from?
I am saved. I know what it means to be lost. I know what it means to live outside of God - not a Christian.
But, now for a number of years, I know what it is to be in Christ: To walk with Christ, talk with Christ, be helped and strengthened, forgiven, lifted up, changed by Christ.
Being saved is not a theoretical thing to me. Salvation is not just a church talk thing. Salvation is real.
BUT THERE ARE MANY WHO CALL THEMSELVES CHRISTIAN WHO DON'T SEEM TO GET INDIGNANT OVER UNRIGHTEOUSNESS.
Honestly, over the years I have wondered why there aren't people all around us who experience righteous indignation over sexual images and themes that increasingly dominate the various "enter- tainment" choices.
I care deeply when I see an Abercrombie & Fitch catalog using sexual images of older teenagers to hit the hot bottoms of other teenagers but I wonder why there is so little outrage from other Christians around me?
I experience righteous indignation when I see how yet another company is using sexual images and themes in advertising.
I hurt when I see young women immodestly clad - tight pants, tight top, skirts or shorts half way up the thigh and beyond, cleavage revealing blouse.
I am sickened when I see a billboard along the expressway advertising a sex club. I think of how women are being victimized and in the process victimizing men. These are centers of sexual addiction, prostitution and alcohol and drug addiction. How can it be that these rot holes have become little by little legitimized?
WHERE DO CONVICTIONS COME FROM AND HOW TO PASS THEM ALONG?
I had loving parents who developed in me a sense of right and wrong through example and through loving and firm discipline over my growing up years.
But as a Christian in my mid-twenties, early thirties, I began to read the Bible daily and to try to apply it to my life. As a young public school teacher, my eyes were being opened to the realities that relativism was creeping into the curriculum, the philosophy of the public schools and into teachers, adminstors and school boards.
DO THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS BUILD INTO THEIR STUDENTS A SENSE OF IMMODESTY,
RIGHTEOUS INDIGNATION, RIGHT AND WRONG, GOOD AND EVIL?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. Though there are some exceptional teachers who do.
But it isn't fair to just blame the public schools. What about the church? And most importantly what about our homes? What about you and what about me? And if no one developed in you Biblical convictions how can you possibly know unless, by the grace of God, convictions were developed within you.
I personally found that as I sensed that I was a "stranger in a foreign land" in this world - a public school teacher who was increasingly feeling alone in a humanistic, relativistic school culture, I turned more and more to asking for God's help, God's direction. My faith grew immensely during those years in the "desert" of the public school.
I needed God's strength and I found it in His word. I began to actively and faithfully memorize scripture - week after week. I buried it in my heart. My confidence and hope in the Lord grew. God was building into me His convictions. I loved Him and He placed in me a desire to do His will. In the reading and the studying of His Word, I began more and more to understand and to have the wisdom to know what He loved and what He hated.
I CREDIT BEING DRIVEN TO MY KNEES.
Being humbled, recognizing that I don't have the answers to major questions and issues of life have immensely helped me to see God and to know that He is God.
"The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom." I believe I have a healthy sense of the reality of God. I recognize that my life is in His hands - that I could be gone in an instant with any number of scenarios. My hope is in my Creator, the Creator God. "Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God."
God has shown Himself to be true, faithful, steadfast, righteous, all knowing, forgiving, loving, gracious, merciful and so much more.
I want to love Him. The best way that I can show that I do is to honor Him by the way I live my life - all of my life - my thought life, public and private life.
HOW DO I PASS THIS ALONG?
Ask my 13 year old son how I'm doing.
I love him and each of my children so much. And you love yours too and your grandchildren. The best thing we can do is to our best to pass along to them an alive faith: God honoring life filled with a strong sense of conviction.
Most mornings I spend about 15-20 minutes with Chris in prayer and in the Word. God help us all.

Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.
But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the masterís use, and prepared unto every good work. 2 Tim 2:19-21 (KJV)

Why not just make the lameness filter inapplicable to editors, like is_troll()?

The ADA should come over to my end of town and spend their time searching for our sniper. Dead children rank a lot higher on my personal indecency scale. Just a thought.

The S.S. I-Have-Issues is leaving the dock when we hear this cry from below:

but I wonder why there is so little outrage from other Christians around me?

Sailor, you best get on that gangplank, your ship is leaving.

Of course, they're too busy hitting each other's hot bottoms, metaphorical or not, to get too outraged at something with which you have a problem. Extensive psychotherapy for fundamentalist freaks: it's not just a good idea, it's the law.

That is great. (1)

When I read that, the lyrics "fat bottom girls" of Queen fame ran through my head.
Thanks for the Friday Funny.
