Journal JesseL's Journal: Guns 12

I know a lot of the people I've friended and some who have friended me enjoy firearms. So I wanted to ask, what have you all got? What are your favorites? What calibers? I know a lot of people don't like to dicuss it with strangers on the internet, so if that's you, no offense intended.

Here's my collection:

The .22 rimfires:
  Ruger 10/22 carbine. Lotsa fun.
3 Remington model 37 target rifles. One is just a barreled action.
  Winchester 52 barreled action
  Winchester 67A bolt rifle
  Ruger 22/45 semi-auto pistol
  H&R 922 revolver
Thre more bolt rifles. Remington & Marlin. Can't remember the models.

The Centerfire Pistols/Revolvers:
AMT Backup 380. WORST. TRIGGER. EVER.
Smith & Wesson Military & Police 38 special
  Arcus 94 9mm Browning Hi-Power Clone
  Luger P08 9mm
Daewoo DH40. My everyday carry gun.
Ballester Molina .45ACP. Argentinian Police Sidearm, 1911ish
Colt M1911. Made in 1917, was great grandad's sidearm in the army air corps.

Centerfire Rifles:
  WUM-1 Romanian semi-auto AK-47 clone
M44 Mosin Nagant, soviet battle rifle
  1896 Krag carbine
Mauser 98 in 30'06. Kinda express rifle styled.
  Springfield M1903, sporterized.
Smith-Corona M1903A3, sporterized, chambered in 308 Norma Magnum.
  Mauser 98, sporter in 22-250
Mauser 98, sporter in 6mm Remington
Carl Gustaff Mauser 96, sporter, 6.5x55 Swedish

Shotguns:
Winchester Model 12s in 16 and 20 gauge
  A.H. Fox 12 gauge side-by-side
  Savage 220A 28 gauge

Other:
1862 Colt, in 38 rimfire. Looks just like this.
Uberti 1858 Remington reproduction. Blackpowder revolver.

And I want more! I need a couple lever actions, a modern 1911, and an AR.

You're doing it right though. You've definitley got quality stuff there. I have a very mixed bag. Quite a few of mine have been impulse buys that were the inevitable result of having a major surplus distributor in the neighborhood (J&G Sales [jgsales.com]), and quite a bit more was inherited in varying degrees of repair. If I had the choice, I'd trade quite a bit of my quantity for some more quality.
      • Thanks! I don't have any collectors pieces like you do, but I do appreciate what I like to call "the ultimate in durable goods" and have only bought new so far (because I'm just getting into the culture, and don't have many real-life 2nd amendment type friends yet and don't know what's a good buy and what to look for or avoid).

Actually, I want a true "Saturday Night Special". Something like a Raven, with the original box and stuff. A $50 pawnshop gun, in other words. Just because they piss so many peop

Those S&W 500s. WOW. My Father-in-Law has one. It's so huge it looks cartoonish. Sure is fun to shoot though. The recoil is nowhere near as bad as you might expect, only a little more than a S&W model 29. You do have to be careful how you grip it though, the trigger gaurd can whack your knuckles if you don't hold it right. The ammo is absurdly expensive, $2+ per round. When I reload for him I can get it down to $0.50 per round. Thankfully no one wants to shoot it enough to make it too costly.

  • I don't have anything in 50 BMG yet. Kicking myself for passing on a barret @ 900$ before when I had the cash in my wallet. Spent it on stupid stuff like rent and insurance..bah!

I guess my fav is my Tangfoglio EAA Witness in .45 ACP, just an all around powerful easy shootin' well made piece. Outstanding accuracy out of the box, didn't have to drift or mod either of the sights, a first for me with a handgun with adjustable sights. John Browning 3rd generation design, most similar to the CZ models

That's another think I'd like to get. An EAA witness in 10mm. Drool. I always liked the cosmetic changes Tanfoglio made from the CZ design. The slab sided slide, the extended beavertail, and the rounded triggergaurd are exactly the way I like them.

So many guns, so little disposable income. It's hard just keeping enough stock of 14 different calibers and 4 different gauges.

So is that 30'06 a surplus '03 Springfield then?
      • I don't really know the full history of it. I bought it from my brother's father-in-law. It's got a match grade barrel (very worn now) and I'm guessing it is older than I am. It is bolt action, the sites have been removed and the top was drilled & tapped to mount the scope. I tried to find info. with the serial number and that's how I learned a little history of the S.A. that was and the S.A. that is. It is heavy. Really heavy.

But it shoots straight- so it is my deer rifle. I paid $100 bu

I'd love to see a picture of it if I could. The old Springfield rifles are the slickest actions in my collection.

I think only about seven of the guns in my collection aren't older than my 28 years. Most were my grandfather's and several were ones he had inherited from his father and father-in-law. The Krag is at least 103 years old (still shoots great), and the 1862 Colt could be as old as 144 years. Like Le Marteau said, they're the ultimate durable goods. I like the thought of these things still being us
          • The last time I went deer hunting, it was a little less than 2 months before our first child was born. Right before she was born was also the last time that I bought a new gun (the single six). I'll snap a shot of it and post it some time. I wish they had left it alone though. Along with getting rid of part of the sites to make room for the scope, they also ground away a good portion of the handle for the bolt - so it wouldn't hit the scope as it move back and forward. It would be neat if they had left
