It's Friday, October 18, 2002, after 5:00 PM local time, and I just discovered Slashdot's journal feature. I've been reading Slashdot for years (what geek hasn't?), but just started posting. I like this place; I just have no time for it. (Oh, well, I guess I'll petition Congress to extend the day to forty hours....)

I think I own a copy of every published work of C. S. Lewis. Lewis considered Til We Have Faces to be his best work. I concur, although it isn't his most accessible work. Lewis was classically educated, and has no problem whatsoever using pagan myths to write about Christian subjects. Til We Have Faces is a retelling of the Greek myth of Psyche; nowhere in the book is Christ mentioned at all.
That confuses many of his readers, not just dumb ones. I was introduced to Til We Have Faces by a Christian roommate my freshman year in college, a roommate who thought the book was "pagan" and didn't want it on her shelf! <G> The thing is, the roommate wasn't (and isn't) stupid -- she just didn't realize what Lewis was up to.
I'm gonna shut up now, because if you haven't read this book, I don't want to spoil it. ;>
