Nvidia does not provide specifications for their hardware or a working free accelerated 3D driver. This leaves Linux users with either a 2D only driver, or a non-free binary driver from Nvidia. With the advent of desktop effects on most Linux distros, there is a greater need for free 3D drivers.

The Nouveau driver project aims to reverse engineer the Nvidia line of graphics cards to provide free open source drivers for Linux users. Pledges for donations to help finance the project are being taken at the Pledge Bank.
