Journal Chacham's Journal: Nonsense: All your comment moderations are belong to us. 14

So, my comment gets modded down as flaimbait. It wasn't positively charged, so i'm not complaining (though there i was). But the next guy, who makes a nice comment, but is factually incorrect (as pointed out in next two comemnts here and here, gets modded up as insightful. That's just silly.

I think we have entered the end of the Second Age.

I the First Age it was Chips and Dips which became Slashdot. It gained users and had many very insightful comments. By the end of the First Age, it had many users, was the tech site of note, and its popularity was in the rise.

This rushed in the Second Age. As popularity brings impending doom, kiddies came. Adolescents who never got a good whippin' opened their immature mouths and believed they owned the world. Modding comments and users and then meta modding were employed for the community to support itself, and the kiddies kept moving in. As the end of the Second Age approaches, comments are made just to fish and be modded, and only comments of contemporary popularity that have no intimation of personal responsibility get modded up. Thus a comment that makes a moderator chuckle or agree to gets blessed. Say something else, and be ignored, or modded down. This and the less tech-heavy stories has caused many to leave or just to stick to JEs.

Soon we shall herald the Third Age. What shall it be? I suspect it shall get only worse. There will be JE modding, and only popular thoughts will be allowed any expression, of course in the name of freedom. Then a new site will arise, and start the same viscous cycle over again.

Or maybe not. But it sounds interesting for a moment or two.

  • That it is in the third-age that Slashdot loses it's hitherto flat-shape, is drawn-up into a sphere.

    It's somewheres in the Slashmarillion.
  • He said that he is unsure about "one's", it is true that most pronouns do NOT have an apostrophe used with them, and I have no clue why "one's" does...
  • Up modded you, down modded him, so everything is back where it was to begin with. had to stop myself from posting correction to his grammer.

I googled it. "One's" is, well:

    PRONOUNS

The ONLY personal possessive pronoun with an apostrophe is "one's".

Can't blame someone for being confused. That is a weird rule!

Heh. And thanx. Not that i didn't deserve to be modded as flaimbait anyway. :P

The reason the others do not have an apostrophe is so that it "is" not mistaken for is. When a contraction and a possesive ending are at odds, the contraction gets it.

The most well known is "its" and "it's". So the possesive is not mixed up with the contraction, the possesive loses it.

"Hers" is because it is the same as "his". "Hi's" makes no sense because "hi" is not the same as "he". Why "hes" is not used is a good question, eit
  • That's already started. I've seen it a number of times.

Yeah. Being that's would never make sense.

I've seen it a number of times.

That's just strange. You aren't just clowning around, are you? Spinning a web of terror?

      Don't you have nightmares?
      • I'm not clowning around. Here's a journal by Pudge in which Railgunner has been modded as troll. [slashdot.org] Granted this occurred at the start of this year, but I've witnessed it since then as well. I reckon they're strikes at people's comments against whom a grudge has formed, lowering karma; and I'm not sure whether journals are metamoderated. At any rate, negative journal moderation is less likely to be countered by positive moderation.
