Journal blinder's Journal: Company Christmas Present 13

so the miserable bastards found me and decided to bestow on me a "christmas present" (my term, i have to put a silver lining on this thing).

my company has been bugging me for a while to "pick up my blackberry." well, i would just usually respond "oh yeah, ok, i'll um, get it later." i've managed to use that for the better part of six months. well, this morning, they came down with a sparkling new blackberry 8700g and had it already configured and set up. oh happy day! another device! another digital tether.

this device is stupidly complex. you wouldn't believe how much "stuff" this thing has... and well, i dunno... i can see its utility, but still man... why!?!

so, now i'm just another cog in the blackberry machine. in a form of protest, i have it clipped to the *inside* of my pocket and i shall never be so crass as to clip the darn thing to my belt. i've always hated that batman look anyway. unless of course they give me a grappling hook gun. then, i'll clip it to my belt.

oh well. i have to get back to work. i'm supposed to be in a meeting. i'm reminded of one of my favorite lines from a very cool movie ("swimming with sharks") "a meeting they can't start without is the only meeting worth going to."

hehehe... kevin spacey is the cool.

    • The blackberry Pearl (despite being named after a tampon) is a really nice device. It weighs almost nothing. If I wanted to be in constant contact with work, I'd have one. But I don't, so I'll keep my cell with internet access and Gmail, thanks.
  • My co-worker's blackberry stopped receiving e-mails over the weekend. I haven't figured it out yet (I'll be tlaking to the "real" techies about it after lunch), but when I do I'll let you know. Maybe its some small setting and, really, I'd hate for it to happen to you. Accidently.
  • let me play with it. If i can't have it... er... 'reconfigured' in less than ten minutes, it's broken or melted. You remember about the alarm watch? Yeah. Dragons and digital are a dangerous combination.

    Let me play!

um... here. *dumps remains of item on desk and runs away*
    • If you have it password protected, it offers to erase itself on the 10th bad attempt.

I was nice and returned it to my co-worker after the 9th try.
  • I myself also have a Yule gift for you, Mr. Blinder. Crystal Reports Blackberry Edition!!! Hahahahahaha!
  • I'm reading (and posting) to /. From mine this week while I'm on holiday. Be sure to pick the 'light' theme. Wish the normal web would render like it does on the bb. Worth noting you can make it work as a modem for your laptop. Nice to surf without others looking over your shoulder.

Be sure to check out the google apps for your bb too. The google maps app saved my butt many times.
  • get rid of my boss' blackberry. He sends me between 30 and 50 e-mails a day, and many of them are from his blackberry.

Today was our holiday lunch for work and he attended. He was flying back to California this afternoon and while sitting in the airport, waiting for his flight, he sent me 20 e-mails.

    ^_^

  • Given the nature of my job and our heavy use of email, I'm quite happy that I got one. The line is drawn at getting a car charger for it though. It only gets charged sitting at my desk at work. If it runs out of juice when I am away from work, that's your problem not mine.
  • I double-dog-dare you to find yourself a (real or toy) grappling hook gun and wear it on your belt in a row with your other devices.
  • Of course, I've got an old-skool 7520 from Nextel, and the Push-to-Talk is a very convenient add-on. I'm also looking for a holster without a clip so I can just pocket it, but I use the differential rings for in-holster/out-of-holster/on-USB like a maniac.

It probably helps that I'm the only person here at work who knows my blackberry's e-mail address, and it only recieves automated messages from systems I need to monitor. Which is still a lot, but it's way faster than SMS paging and way more detailed in t
  • Get IT to install an Instant Messaging client on all BB's in the organization. ;-)
