Journal vjl's Journal: back online at home! 2
Well, PacBell has [kinda] come through for me. 24 hours ahead of schedule, my DSL line is now finally live. My only internet access away from work has been my T-Mobile/Danger HipTop/SideKick, which worked great the first week, but now I can't get a data connection unless i'm in the middle of the parking lot at home or on the road driving.
It's a bit funny to have to take a walk away from the new apartment just to be able to pick up my e.mail. Feels like my ol' BBS days and offline mail readers - get online, pick up mail, walk home, get kicked offline, reply to mail, walk to park, mail gets sent.
But the HipTop has come in handy; just wish the data signal was as strong as it was the first week i had it [i could put it next to my mail server at work, and it would beep before my 15-second pine->imap check would beep!]. Now it just sits there in 'voice only' mode; no data. But I get to read my e.mail on the way to work at stop lights.
So the new apartment is finally coming together. We had some major problems with the leasing office [which resulted in us not getting phone service for a week and half, which delayed the DSL service from being reconnected].
I'll have more details later, but for now, I'm just glad to be back in action. Life without a 'net connection just plain sucks. And that's coming from someone with a full-time job and a long-time girlfriend. I can't imagine what I'd do had this happened 5 or 6 years ago!

The hip-top aka sidekick is a cell phone like device made by Danger Inc. More info on that is available here [t-mobile.com]and here [danger.com].
There was a few threads on this on
The device is pretty darn cool. I'm hoping to write a mini-review of it this weekend, now that I've owned it for a month.
