Journal banky's Journal: Dogfish Head 120-Minute Imperial IPA 9

120 IBUs
20% ABV
$10/bottle (regular 16oz)

That sound you hear is me shuddering orgasmically with each sip. This is seriously intense brew.

the Emperor's in the pig sty, and the geisha's in the shack, and you better believe I'll hold 'em here, until the Feds, they pay me back

  • I prefer the 90. Of course they used to have Randall the Enambler where they would run the 90 back through the hops again to give it this suspended animation texture and that would go down like velvet. Too bad they hated the machine and took it out of the Tavern in Gaithersburg. Ahh well. I guess I'll just have to stick to the rest of their catalog.

      I'm a hop-head so it's liquid sex for me.

They're opening a tavern in falls church, so of course I up and move to ashburn. brilliant.
  • Perhaps it was the batch I had (*was yours aged at all?) but I drank through a fresh "six" (yep, a $54 six pack! (it's $9 a bottle in Mont County)) this past spring and it's poorly done. It's too "Hot" tasting. Which is a total surprise, because the WorldWideStout at 18%abv is perfectly balanced; not too much alcohol on the taste.

/And me 'n' Teh Wolf are Hopheads, so don't try popping that shit here; it's a questionable beer.

    • Probably a bad batch. I had it on tap at a pub here in Austin and had a double beergasm. I love everything I've had from these guys except their pumpkin ale, which sucked ass. They used too much brown sugar in it, which gave it a really hot, cheap taste. I would have added a small amount of molasses, which is what gives brown sugar the flavor anyway, and stuck with pretty much straight malt. I'm having a nice little 60 right now. mmmm

Thanks for the tip; will try again... especially since everyone keeps saying it's the jam. I was in a wine store today and they were talking about the 120!

On a related note, I can offer you exactly the same advice on the punkin' ale. They even BROUGHT IT BACK to the Ale house this December, it was so popular this year.

/I'm so-so on their Fort... thought Chateau Jiaxhu (sp?!) was surprisingly good
        • A friend of mine bought a bottle of the Fort to age it for a year. I'm considering doing the same.

As far as the off-flavor of the pumpkin ale, I'm pretty sure it was the result of fermenting table sugar, which produces a harsh, hot flavor. There are one or two quite good pumpkin ales out there that I like. I was shocked that DFH wasn't one of them. I can't remember the name of the one I like most. It tastes very much like a pumpkin pie.

          • So is it considered a dessert beer then? ;-)

Anyone tried Left Hand Milk Stout? It has a nice stout taste but then the aftertaste is milk, with very little bitterness.

            • Actually, it's damned near a dessert beer. It's not actually all that sweet, but it tastes more like a pie than you'd expect -- the good one I can't remember, that is. *consults the wisdom of Google* Here is the one I like: Buffalo Bill's [buffalobillsbrewery.com]. I've never had any of their others, but that one's tasty.

A friend of mine who's also a serious beer fan really likes Left Hand's beers, including that milk stout, if I recall correctly. I've tried it and liked it okay, but it didn't leave a strong impression on me.
