Journal TechnoLust's Journal: UPDATE: Not familiar with our postal system are we? 5

If you read this JE, then you know this dude tried to send my package to my gmail address. So today I checked paypal to see what the dealio was. Well the old shipping number is gone and there as new one. This one says it was shipped. I checked the address just in case. The address is:
[real.name]@gmail.com [Real Address]
Atlanta, GA [ZIP]

Close enough I guess.

Hey, at least he didn't try to send it over Tor [eff.org] or something.
  • When I worked for the government, I was a part of the process that mailed out bills. As it turns out, the Post Office will accept addresses in the form of:

    Real Name
    "General Delivery"
    City, ST ZIP

Notice the lack of a street address - the postal worker would try to locate the person and hand-deliver the letter. This was the appropriate method to mail the bills to homeless people.

Obviously, this works best in small towns. If the postal worker could not locate the homeless person, the mail was held for some

    • The government mailed bills to homeless people? Did they not realize the reason they are homeless is probably because they don't have any money?

It's not that - it is we have a responsibility to attempt to collect. To not attempt to collect from some people is unfair to those people from whom we do attempt to collect.

Actually, here in Visalia we do have one homeless guy who has lots of money stashed somewhere - he had a messy divorce, and decided to go homeless to screw his wife who wanted lots of alimony....

        • I can see that, and I guess it would cost more to pay someone to determine who couldn't pay and we shouldn't send bills to than to just send them to everyone. And when I lived in TN, I met a guy that was 37 waiting tables at AppleBee's. He had a Masters in English and had been teaching at a state college making decent money. He resigned and started waiting tables for the same reason, to keep his ex-wife from getting any money out of him.
