i know what happened. someone, against my almost constant preaching, pleading, harassing and begging, decided to deploy site.properties from their local machine to the dev machine.

this makes the dev machine a sad panda

/sigh

what should the appropriate punishment be for this flagrant abuse of a development environment?

Death is good, but it has to be witnessed by the whole dev team and very very memorable and painful. Slowly being pulled apart by four horses might work. I wonder if lil' ponies are strong enough for this? They would probably be cheaper to rent; make sure to ask the pony guy before signing anything.
      • if you locked them in a glass, soundproof room with my kids' my little pony butterfly island [amazon.com] set and fixed it so that they couldn't stop the music from playing - the whole team could watch them lose their minds and ultimately kill themselves. (and i'm guessing if you didn't leave them anything else, they'd be forced to rip their own tongue out and use it as a noose) that'd be quite the object lesson. (your mention of lil' ponies sparked that bit of genius)
        • When I was young, my little sister was very into My Little Ponies. Being The Oldest(TM) I was allowed to have a TV with VCR and TI/994A in my room. Along with that privilege came the tradeoff that if my sister wanted to watch a video and Mom and Dad were using the main VCR, she could use my room. This normally wasn't a problem. My sister and I got along well most of the time, unless we were vying for the attention of our parents. One evening, I'd had to get up very early for some reason and went to bed

keep in mind, i would never do something so vulgar as to use the word "broke" in that context. that was what the actual subject line was by one developer to the rest of the ream. i was merely responding.

my subject would have been something like:

      dev (HOSTNAME) has a problem
then gone on to copy/paste error messages, and probably relevant log snippets :)

The appropriate punishment (yeah, right) is to call a meeting and have the person who did it try to figure out what happened in front of the group. Grill him on how he thought it was "supposed" to work and them show him reality. When the group turns on him to feed call a 5 minute break.

  • What I would *want* to do and what I would *actually* do are two different things.

I would *want* to lock the offender off of any dev access for 3d6 time periods. The only problem with this (especially where I work) is that not only would such an action probably get me fired, but the offender would likely see it as an excuse to take a vacation.

What I would *actually* do is suggest that the Powers That Be remind the dev team that there are certain things that should not be done, especially when it makes the
