Journal Em Emalb's Journal: More Ubuntu assistance requested.... 7

Hey linux gurus, here's the haps:

I have 6.10 (thx Jaw) running on a Dell D820. The issue is, the normally intelligent dude who purchases laptops for this company didn't spend the extra $30 on the nvidia graphics card (previous entry was correct, this is a newer laptop than that one was) and instead is limiting me to the 945GM express chipset...basically, the windows video card.

Here's the thing, my graphics are alright, 1024x768, but I know that someone out there knows how to make it better...but all the links I've found to do so are broken. Anyone help out a complete and utter noob? I'll try to actually, you know, stick around and answer questions this time. I'm thinking there's something in the xorg file I can tweak, but I ain't seeing it, and as I said, N00B = me.

Any and all help appreciated.

  • Ok, so...hitting cntrl-alt-backspace on startup seems to get the resolution issue fixed. I don't get it. Gotta reload to get the damned thing to show the proper resolution?

    WTF?
    • xrandr -s 0

This will set your resolution to 1280 x 800 or so. At least, that's what it does on my Inspiron 640m, which has the same video hardware.

The nice thing is, I get 1600 x 1200 on my 20" flat panel.

Oh - be sure to run xrandr as the same user that is running x, usually you, not as root.
  • Does it show any screen resolution choices when you choose System - preferences - screen resolution?
also what video card do you have?

if it's nvidia have you installed the nvidia drivers?
    • bah i read your post finally.
ignore the nvidia shit i asked.
Have you increased video memory in the bios? is it possible?

      anyhow check this chit out

      • yeah, I saw that page....it actually led me to another page where a dude was having the exact same problem. All my settings are set to 1200x800 but the only option I get in the stupid resolution screen is 1024x768. I don't fucking get it.

Oh well. I guess I'll just deal with this shit til 7.whatever comes out.

        Thanks for the digging around.
        • i guess it's look before you leap with that chipset.
          • well, I guess so. :)

The thing is, if dude had taken two seconds to think about it before ordering these laptops (at like $2500 a piece, 15 new ones) he would have realized A) not everyone uses windows and B) that's a shitty driver.

Oh well. As I said, soon enough 7.x will be out and I'll just hibernate this bitch every time I'm not using it.

The Macintosh is Xerox technology at its best.
