Journal i kan reed's Journal: Fuck implicitly endorsing racist communities. I'm out 6

I have no more tolerance for the bigoted fucks on slashdot.
I lived through dice and beta.
I didn't mind the things I saw as advertisements.
I had my fair share of debates I learned something from.

But the level of tolerance of racism and sexism on the part of slashdot users has gotten to be just too much. There's a level of shitty user base I just can't stand. At this point, with all the neo-misogynists and racial realists, and the widespread tolerance and endorsement of their positions by moderators, I can't see this being a community with meaningful insight anymore.

I'm sure none of those shitty people will be sorry to see me leave.

  • The majority of people who read slashdot don't post, so you're getting a skewed representation of the readership.

The trolls who post anonymously do so because ... well, they're trolls. Easy to filter out because their comments are stuck at -1 or 0, but also interesting to read because replying to some of them (when they make a pseudo-intellectual argument) is necessary to keep from making it look like their opinion is popular, when it's not.

In any event, I hope you'll stick around.

    • Serial lurker here that would much prefer that you don't leave.

I agree totally. Please don't leave. Take a break if you must, but it is helpful if the vile and shitty part of the userbase is at least sometimes told they are vile and shitty. I'm not shy of doing so, and it helps to see other people wading in as well.
  • I have this same problem offline. I choose to raise my kids in an nice community with good schools. It's sometimes a struggle to afford living in an area like this.

The bad thing is that so few people in this area have ever experienced economic hardship. They don't realize how good they have it. They self identify as conservative and they a have total disconnect from any sort of real adversity.

I see this creeping into my kids attitudes. They don't appreciate the things I can afford to do for them and th
