Journal TopShelf's Journal: Tux racing in the Indy 500? 3

This morning's Indianapolis Star profiles a local programmer who is raising funds to put Tux on a race car for the Indianapolis 500, which runs in later this month. His website has already raised over $11,000 for the cause, which hopes to promote Linux during one of the world's most-watched sporting events. If he can raise $350,000, a primary sponsorship would be available, which would mean a larger logo featured on the side of the car.

  • that's a lot of money. maybe i'm short sighted or not thinking 'outside the box' or whatever - but i'd rather see that kind of money going to open source projects. i don't know how many people watch the race any more - but even if it were a lot of people - i don't think having the penguin on a car will have any impact on their operating system choices.
  • While there are about 100,000+ people at the track the Indy 500 is a black hole of TV Viewership!

This guy ought to put his Penguin on the side of NASCAR car if he wants someone to see it.

Actually, the crowd at the track is closer to 300,000 than 100,000. You're right, TV viewership has dropped off since decades past, but I believe it's on the rebound. Heck, with three women in the field this year, maybe they'll get Oprah to sponsor a car and draw in the soccer mom demographic...
