Journal mattatwork's Journal: 100% DRM free, Personal ID still attached 2

According to My Way News, consumer watchdog and privacy groups have begun noticing the iTunes personal data that is being put into the songs consumers download off of iTunes. While these groups admit this had been prevalent with music with DRM, the information left in these higher quality, DRM-free songs could be used to track users who pirate songs. What's the big advantage or difference now if they take away the restrictions of DRM but still leave in features reminiscent of DRM?

    The advantage is no DRM.

    "DRM free" songs are just that; they don't have any DRM in them. That's it. Just because a company gives you DRM-free music doesn't mean that they suddenly trust you not to go putting them up on a P2P service, and they're certainly not relinquishing their right or ability to go after you, if you do. They're just not treating you like a criminal from the
  • DRM = "Digital Rights Management", aka the management (control) of the users rights for digital files. With DRM, they can explicitly prevent you from doing things. Without, there is nothing they can do to outright prevent you from doing anything you want with it.

    However, some of the things you may want to do (like put your files up on filesharing sites,) is still a violation of their copyright. They are trusting that you will not violate their copyright, instead of taking active measures to prevent you f
