You're saying that we can talk smack all we want, as long as we don't talk shit about the President? Perhaps we should outlaw any criticism of the President, because that's just one step away from threatening him. Maybe we should include the Judicial branch, too. After that, the Legislature. Hell, make talking about the entire government illegal.
Then this will be a paradise, and a beacon of hope and freedom to the unwashed foreigners "who hate us because we love freedom" (Shrub).

Because of the special limited status of the law, the secret service is allowed to abuse the definition with no real repurcussions. They go after statements that are certainly not direct threats all of the time. Discussion (without any statements of malice whatsoever) of how easy it would be to kill the President has been enough to draw the unwanted attention of the Secret Service down on people before.
