pilbender's Journal: Been spending time using another account.

I've switched jobs. Usual gripes with the old programming shop. Nothing new, earth shattering or insightful. I sometimes wonder if I'm in the right field. I like programming, but I've talked with so many people who have quit and I don't see much regret from any of them.

Funny thing is, I like playing around and doing my own thing when it comes to technology. But I hate working on other people's garbage. I also hate producing more garbage on top of it. A little discouraged today. Everyone has those days.

I've spent the last few months using another Slashdot account. It was fun for a while but sometimes this place wears me out. Too many extreme points of view. I get all upset when I see poor thinking and judgement. I don't mean trolls either. I mean the people who are dedicated and serious. It bothers me. I've found I'm much happier being productive doing my own thing.

*sigh* Not one of my more insightful posts. Sometimes a little self honesty cleans the soul. Tomorrow is a new day.

Hey man, I can't claim not to be pretty extreme in my views, but I do understand the hating working on someone else's crap thing.

Since my 2nd year in college (because of my admittedly extreme views), I've refused to use or develop for Microsoft only stuff. As a freelancer, I've stuck to it, and it hasn't been easy, but it's felt right. It hasn't paid as well as working for someone else yet, but it may some day. In the mean I'm happy. I am working on several side projects a the moment. I'm so busy all the time that I can't figure out what to do next sometimes. I have to keep my regular job as my first priority simply because I'm responsible for my income to family and such.

I'm currently working on an advanced Slackware configuration book. I'm about 25% of the way though. Don't know if there will be any interest but I keep working on it. Besides, I use it. So it is a worth while task even if a publisher has no interest in it.

I worked in a research lab for Aerospace for a while as an undergrad. The professor retired and the lab closed on his departure.

I now recognize that as one of the best times of my life in terms of learning and fun. I was 20 years old at the time and I did not recognize the value in that position. I pissed it away for a number of reasons I don't care to go into.

I'm still struggling a bit financially with family life and all. I intend to go back for a graduate degree at some point. Maybe things will chan
