Cool, I just wrote a book! (I wrote the seven new chapters.)
Two of the most popular editors are vi (and its work-alikes), and emacs. This is O'Reilly's first new edition of their classic "Learning the vi Editor" in ten years and it was an honor to be part of the new release. Love vi, love emacs, it doesn't matter, I'm glad O'Reilly committed to updating their entry for vi.

Congratulations! Having spoken with a few authors over the years, I know this is not an easy thing to accomplish.
Me, I'm a vi/vim guy. By the time I was finally exposed to emacs, the learning curve was simply to steep and the amount of time I'd have to invest to overcome it too long before I would be able to easily accomplish the same things with emacs as I can with vi/vim.

For me vi was a no brainer, since when I was starting out as a sysadmin (mostly on SunOS), vi came installed by default, while emacs wasn't. Kinda hard to do an OS install back then if you didn't know vi :-)

That's pretty cool, to work up material good enough for publication. I imagine that it takes a lot of work (and re-work) to get it right.
Don't think me a traitor, but the only distribution I use comes with joe by default. And that's what I learned first (WordStar on CP/M) so that's what I like. ;-)
