Minor and Major updates

User Journal 8

Pudge made a cool change in discussions- if you link to a comment deep inside a thread and click 'More' the sytem is much more intelligent about crawling down and retrieving children, and then parents and grandparents and so forth up the ancestry. So odds are you'll get more related comments sooner.

We now abbreviate journals in the firehose... so they are more like slashdot stories with a Read More link to the full text.

The big user facing change this week was structural: historically we had 2 different "skeletons" on Slashdot, but with this refresh we unified to a single one. This change simplifies maintenance for us quite a bit (maintaining the idle section and the firehose views of the same data was a royal pain).

You also will see some changes to the firehose.pl layout. We're playing with the tab layout a bit, moving some menus around and better integrating the core functions into the site chrome. It's a bit buggy atm, so feel free to email me if you see something wonky. We're extinguishing a few minor brush fires but there's no forest fires that we're aware of.

Sorry! There are no comments related to the filter you selected.

Less skeleton's in the closet, then, eh? (1)

Sorry... bad joke...

The countdown timer on submit is awesome, though (I just noticed, so I don't know if that's a recent add or not).

That's been around, but only if you're "close"... I've never seen it higher than 30 seconds, but maybe my timing is just that off.

Font on front screen (1)

Not sure if it's Google Chrome, my device driver, or what, but the rendering on the "Category" portion of the article title on the homepage is really fuzzy- and I'm working on a flat screen.

Firehose (1)

It's broken at work, where they dumbly insist on IE6. Actually I doubt the firehoase is what's broken, everyone knows IE6 is a shambles ;)

It only shows stories that have already made the front page.

That's been firehose's (annoying - if I wanted to read the main page, I'd be on the main page) default view for a very long time (I miss the days when it remembered what view I had been on). I spent an hour or so one day fighting with the tab-defining stuff (firefox would let me change the settings, but when I went to name the tab, it would either just keep going back to untitled, or the tab would disappear, or worse... make another one of my hard-won tabs disappear.

Eventually I would set up my "untitled" tab, then switch to ie7 where the slider didn't work but it would let me rename the tab, then back to firefox to configure the next one.

Looks like now the "tabs" are real tabs across the top of the browser just under the slashdot heading. If you manage to get them set up and you're logged in, you can jump straight to the configured tab using (eg) http://slashdot.org/firehose.pl?tab=Journals [slashdot.org]

the tabs stuff is fairly broken for a number of reasons. we're fixing it in a few weeks, but there's a couple of other things on the list first.

Slash Boxes (1)

I noticed this morning my SlashBoxes on the home page were missing. I double checked, my preferences still say they should be there, but they're nowhere in sight =)
