Journal JWSmythe's Journal: Verification of closed college/university degree? 3

Here's a question that was posed to me, so I pose it to everyone else. :)

A friend of mine was going to a small college. She recently received her degree, so all is fine and dandy. Well, the school also went out of business since she got her degree.

From what I've understood from others, when a school has changed names or ownership, they still keep the records, and you can call the campus during normal working hours to confirm credentials. What if the school simply goes out of business?

When she applies for a new job, with her well earned degree, how can a future employer confirm that degree, or is it now only worth the paper it's printed on?

  • There are local government and local newspaper and probably online historical archives that feature the college. Just some digging and making photocopies should be sufficient as an attachment to the CV if the question comes up with a potential employer. If she is not in that area any longer, I would suggest she hire a local paralegal in that college's area, have them do a few hours work and get the copies, have them notarized as well, then just save them in her own records. Might cost a few hundred bucks, b

    • Well, there's a new business opportunity:

Get a degree based on your "life experience" at well-known colleges and universities that have gone out of business. We'll present you with professionally designed diplomas guaranteed to look just like the real thing, complete with embossed stamp and signature. Employers won't be able to prove you didn't earn the degree, and we'll also provide you with copies of articles from well-known journals and newspapers to establish the school's prestigious reputation.

      A four

      • That's funny, but in researching the issue, I found that there are places doing exactly that. They're sold as novelty and "replacement" degrees. Did you school close and you've misplaced your degree? No problem, we'll print a new one for you. They'll go as far as providing transcripts. :)

I'd prefer to sell diploma's for "University of the Smythe". Of course our majors involve drinking tolerance and slackerism. :)

Just kidding, I haven't sold any yet. :)

BLISS is ignorance.
