Journal Captain Splendid's Journal: Music: Summer 9

I'm going to try and do this more often.

Famous last words.

FYI, out of all the new songs/artists listed in the comments that I was able to listen to, the only one that really stood out for me was Bobby Bare Jr.'s "The Heart Bionic", a shambling country-flavoured rocker. Dude's also got a nice voice.

Anyway, this JE's about Summer Songs. I've been tagging the hell out of my music collection lately, and one of the obvious ones was "summer". I've got most of the usual suspects, but I'd thought I'd crowdsource a bit and see what you guys come up with, and at the end of the week, I'll post the full list of what I consider to be worthy.

As an appetizer, here's my last 10 "summer" mp3s played:

  • A Summer Song - Chad & Jeremy
  • California Sun - Rivieras
  • The Warmth Of The Sun - Beach Boys
  • Surfin' Bird - Trashmen
  • Yeah - Usher & Lil' Jon & Ludacris
  • Summertime - DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince
  • Shiver - Horny Toad!
  • Summer In The City - Lovin' Spoonful
  • Return Of Django - Asian Dub Foundation
  • The Reason - Hoobastank

  • That was probably the very first punk rock song in existance. There aren't many punk bands out there who haven't covered it.

    • Hadn't thought about that. Reminds me a bit of the first time I heard the Beatles' "Helter Skelter" and I thought to myself "Whoa, proto-metal!"

Blue Cheer was doing metal mefore the Beatles' White Album (let alone Black Sabbath). Ever hear their rendition of Summertime Blues?

If you really want your head to asplode, take Helter Skelter and reverse it digitally. It becomes "I Like Smack." Lennon was an artistic genius.

would it be too much trouble to link to the lyrics and mp3?  As your fan, I would appreciate it.  I do not recognize all of them, though I might remember with a little reminder.

      iTunes, dumbass.
    • Step 1:Install Firefox.
Step 2:Highlight artist/song you might be confused about.
Step 3:Right-click and select "Search Google for highlighted term", you lazy bastard.

      You're welcome.
  • For that lovely, cheesy lounge music touch -- but it's catchy, dammit!
