Journal mcgrew's Journal: The new "achievements" page 14
I'm amused at the new "achievements" page at slashdot. I noticed it a while back when someone friended me and I went to friend him back. But it has a couple of glitches, the biggest of which is nothing you did before April Fool's Day of this year is included.
Unless I'm reading it wrong; there's a "2" before each number, is it the number squared?
For instance, it says I "got a score 5 comment" six times. There's a lot more than six! "Submitted a story that was posted" lists three. That's true for this year only; last year under the mcgrew uid, six were posted. So that's nine. That of course doesn't count the ones I posted under sm62704, which of course it shoudn't.
"Days read in a row" lists two - WTF??? Except on weekends, and most of April and May of this year, I'm almost always here. Maybe it's counting times logged in - but I seldom log out.
It lists, without numbers, The Tagger 2009-03-29, Posted a Comment 2009-02-20, Member of the 5 Digit UID Club 2009-03-27, The Maker 2009-03-27, Comedian 2009-03-27, Had a Comment Modded Up 2009-03-27
It's seldom that I don't get a message "comment moderation", and most of them are up-mods.
I haven't tagged a story in a long time. The FAQ doesn't say what "the maker" is. "The comedian" is for those who have been modded 5, funny; I get lots of those, but no number in the "achievements" page.
I don't get it.
Another thing I don't get is why the "no karma bonus" box doesn't seem to work. Even if I check the box it starts at 1, and there are lots of times I need it (e.g., "OT-Your Sig").
The FAQ page could use a little work - for instance, on the "achievements" FAQ it lists the "five digit UID club" and says "really? You need an explanation?" Well, no, but I have no clue what "the maker" is and can't find it anywhere.
Under "How do I find other people's journals?" it says "To find other users journals, go to your friends list. There it will show the latest journals of your friends. To search and find a strangers journal use the Slashdot search feature." Better is to just click their user name in a comment they've posted, then click "journals". Even faster is just typing the path in, where user is the person's user name, it's http://www.slashdot.org/~user/journal. For example, my journal is at http://www.slashdot.org/~mcgrew/journal.
What's that "maker" thing? Does anybody reading this know?

I took it to mean "2 to the power of [whatever number]", which makes sense on a geek site where we tend to often count by powers of 2 anyways.

Should be 2^6, or 64. Where exactly it came up with that count from is anyone's guess.

I thought I heard that comments moderated "funny" don't help your karma; maybe that is why they don't count how many times it happens?

Assuming you figure out which browser displays their layout correctly, it's trying to show you that you have 2^6 (64) score 5 comments and that you've read slashdot 2^2 days in a row. (I suspect that this resets as soon as you skip a day and is not a "record high score", I have a blank "days metamoderated in a row" achievement, which I used to do all the time before metamoderation turned useless)

I have to ask, was there a time when metamoderation wasn't useless? I have never seen it make a difference in my experience. And lately any time that I try it, I am served up a selection of un-moderated comments anyways.
From my vantage point, they simply took something worthless and made it worthless and pointless.

It used to be that you moderated the moderations. You were given a list of ten comments and one moderation for each comment, which didn't always match the final moderation; you might be moderating a moderator who modded a comment "troll" that was +4, informative" at the time.
You would mod the moderation "fair" or "unfair" (or "funny" or "unfunny" if you were moderating one that was modded "funny"). If the moderator whose moderation you were metamoderating got too many "unfairs" or "unfunnys", they would get

I do recall that. I did metamoderation many times "back then" as well. I seem to recall the system wasn't all that smart then, either. More than once I was metamoderating either a post I posted, or a comment I moderated.
If the moderator whose moderation you were metamoderating got too many "unfairs" or "unfunnys", they would get fewer/no more mod points.
I may be overly skeptical here, but I never knew of that actually happening. Granted I have never had 15 mod points (though I fairly often get 5 and occasionally 10); but I have never seen metamoderation feedback for any of my moderations, either.

Seems probable. The question then is which red4man user posts well enough under their regular UID to acquire mod points.
