Yeah, I just stuck the camera and macro lens on a focusing rail and decremented the distance by.5mm at a time. Photoshop's focus stacking algorithm did all the rest of the work. Theoretically, it should work for your reversed lens macro approach as well...
I thought stacking only came in one type; the kind astronomers use to get clearer images through the atmosphere. Well, ok, and HDR. Didn't know there was a focus stacking at all. This is very cool.
So long story short, I installed chdk [wikia.com] on my $300 Canon digicam (SD880). I only get 1mm control over my focus, but hey considering I didn't pay anything extra, I am not going to complain!:)
The end result picture is on my blog [wordpress.com].
How are things going with the computational framework for mapping neural circuitry? Any cool follow-up work you or others are doing with the groundwork you've laid?

The focus stacking is really seamless; how did you bracket the focal point? Manually dialing the focus ring?
Makes my reverse lens macro work [flickr.com] look like junk =).

Yeah, exposure stacking/dynamic range stacking and focus stacking... all the pieces are there for synthetic cameras. :-)

And thanks! I might do an animated gif of the frames this weekend if I can find some time.
