Journal CleverNickName's Journal: a return which is long overdue (plus achievements!) 17

I've lurked at /. without posting for ages, mostly because I just don't have the time to interact like I used to.

But I've been clicking through the old RSS feed more and more lately, and when I saw the PAX Plague thread today, I came over to comment, since I'm kind of affected by the whole damn thing. I thought I'd take a look around since I haven't been here in awhile, and I saw that there are freaking ACHIEVEMENTS associated with our accounts. It's silly, and I'm sure it's been here forever, but I thought it was awesome and I was delighted when I read it.

I didn't realize how much I missed Slashdot until I spent some time here today, and I bet that anyone who joined in the last 2 years doesn't even give a shit about my stupid comments or anything, but it felt good to come back here, and feel safely among my people again.

What are you talking about? We all love you, Willy!

Not to be mistaken for "We all love your willy".

I mean, most of us have no experience with your willy.

  • Achievements? Nobody on slashdot achieves anything. ;-) It's news to me too, but I've hardly been on since you got busy elsewhere. Do they keep track of things like Biggest Asshat?
  • Welcome back! I haven't posted or hardly read the comment threads in a long while for similar reasons. Why get involved if you can only do it halfway (or less)? But today get got an e-mail about a new user journal update! :-) The achievements are still somewhat new. Somewhere around April Fools Day I believe. Goofy but still kind cool.
  • so I just watched your leverage episode this week-end via the tnt web site. That was totally awesome. The look on your face at the end - priceless. My wife and I lol'd.

The Guild - a sweet show that is looking so much sweeter. You are really helping them build momentum rather than falling into the repetition trap that I've seen haunt a lot of internet shows. I am stoked after the first 2 episodes of season 3 to see where it all goes.

Synergy is cool - when you teamed up with John Scalzi it blew my mind.

Thanks for the reminder about The Guild, and pointing out a couple of other good online shows!

I watched the first season of TG, then forgot about it. I need to get back to it. And, of course, I'm interested to see what video goodness CNN is up to.

    • Yeah, I loved the netbook "standoff" at the beginning. Cheesy, but hilarious.
  • Achievements were this year's April Fool's Day prank gone wild, and then apparently more-or-less forgotten.

I'm sure the achievements are just for those who have nothing better to do all day but refresh the /. home page just to be the first to post.
  • Welcome back, Wil. I read your blog and see you at Fark, but it's good to see you here again.

  • I've become mostly a lurker lately too, especially since I switched most of my /. reading to google reader. Anyways, I've always enjoyed your comments and it's good to see you back.

  • Let me be the first to say: welcome back! I'm somewhat of a fan, following your blog and your comments here, and I know for a fact there are lots of more fans here.

If some people want to follow Wil's comments here as well, just click his nickname anywhere and you'll end up on his slashdot user page. Then in the top right, click 'friend this user', then click 'Yup I'm positive'. His comments will get a +5 automatically.

  • Thanks to the power of the computer internet I got a notice when this was posted.

    Lurk less.

  • This is like someone reinstalling World of Warcraft after finally managing to cancel their subscription, or picking up smoking again when you managed to quit.

  • this is my first time logging in in years, so I can relate. Those achievements are a weird new thing.

  • Years ago you said you were thinking about traveling Route 66 - you ever do that? I'd given you a couple of spots to check out here in Kansas, but never heard about it.
