Journal Daengbo's Journal: Ask Slashdot: Reinstalling over a running system 4
I have used chroots several times to install new systems alongside running systems before, finishing by rebooting into the new partition. For the first time, however, I find myself wanting to reintall over a running system, and changing arch'es, too. This sounds impossible to my ears, so I'm calling on some help from my friends here. Any ideas on how to make this work?

Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10 installer comes with a few options - total wipe & install, side by side and an over the top option.
I chose option 3. By the look of it it blew away all of /usr, /bin, overwrote most /boot and any other system related file (X config stuff and so on).
I have /home, /tmp, /var and some other stuff on separate partitions. I manually (pen & paper) wrote down what lived where so when it

It sounds impossible to me too. I don't have any better suggestion other than the chroot magic you have already done.

Thanks. As I said before, I though it was probably impossible, but Slashdot is full of wisdom I don't have.
Do you mean while it's in use? (Score:2)
You could do it while people are trying to use it but it'll break down as apps get replaced with incompatible versions. At the end, you might even be unable to shut down properly, and then who knows what will happen...
If by changing architectures you mean 32 bit to 64 bit you could get around SOME of this by building and installing the 64 bit kernel first, which will run the 32 bit stuff you have now as well as the 64 bit executables that are being installed, but you'll still have stuff flip out over the l
