Journal famazza's Journal: Learning How to Learn

This month I saw something I should already had previewed.

As some of you know I work for Conectiva in Brazil, involved in a migration project from Oracle to PostgreSQL at Vesper (a telecom company in Brazil). And the last part of the project was a PostgreSQL support contract, provided by Conectiva and dbExperts.

Well, while the migration was in course there were a couple of new applications that were successfully directly developed in the new plataform (PostgreSQL). Of course the has found may problems, and what suprised them the most was that they solved them by theirselves, whith no support from Conectiva neither dbExperts.

Today Vesper S.A. believes that they doesn't need to contract PostgreSQL support, because they can do it by theirselves.

I should have known better, I should have previewed this. This kind of support is based in information, and should not work for so long.

This is the Lesson for this month. Supporting free software is basing your bussiness in information, and might stop working as soon as your client discovers that he can look for the information by himself.
