Now I've done it

  • Real geeks write web pages for themselves (in uber-simple HTML so it can be viewed with Lynx) to tell the world what their up to; while staying the hell away from facebook.

Exceptional geeks hack themselves into wikipedia [wikipedia.org] in their spare time.

I may be a geek, but a lot of my friends aren't. I held off of facebook for a long while, but nearly every non-tech person I know is using it now. At least I never signed up for a myspace page.

To me, that seems like a problem that can resolve itself over time if ignored long enough. Eventually, facebook will whither away and die an irrelevant death. If you just ignore it, you can eventually become the first of your friends to not be on facebook, and then go back to using normal methods of communication.

I admit, it is rather obscure [slashdot.org].

Well, you just gave the reason I've stayed off those silly myface type of sites. But it didn't work. I ignored the hell out of spacebook, and the stupid thing is still there, with all my non tech friends and family on it.

But I guess I should be honest about the REAL reason I got on facespace. My wife and I have a polyamorous style open marriage. She's got this very cute history geek girl friend that she does theater with. I asked my wife if I could ask said geek-girl out, and my wife said yes, BUT, cute gee

All my family and friends know my cell phone number. They can contact me there and I'm content with that. If I have a picture I want them to see I post it on my website and tell them to find it there. Works extremely well for me :)

but pretty much every Christian out there still considers adultery a sin.

My wife and I are agnostic, yet we do not approve of adultery. If it works for you, more power to you; I'm not aiming to change your mind. Me, the only thing I ever got rid of a girlfriend for was infidelity...

Okay, that Shatto reference WAS obscure

I'm pretty sure I warned you on that one ... :)

Adultery, to me anyhow, means cheating. It is the lying that is the problem, not the external relationship. My wife and I were monogamous for seven of our ten years together, and that worked for us then. But we both really enjoy deep connections with others. Polyamory is not swinging, it isn't about casual sex, it's about relationships. The idea is, we can love as many deserving people as we can find the time for. We've got our rules, and straying outside those would still be considered cheating.

That's what you get for reading too much Heinlein. And why I've been modding your posts as funny.

That's what I get for being born to hippie parents. Who lived on a commune and had a three way marriage. And reading too much Heinlein. And Spider Robinson. And going to Rainbow Gatherings. And, well, too much weird shit to count. I'm a died in the wool American freak, and someday I will have my anarcho-syndicalist commune and I won't be 'angin' on to outdated imperialist dogma which perpetuates the economic an' social differences in our society!

Ah, Rainbow Gatherings. You just took me back to my hippie days in PDX. Dead shows at Autzen... Long hair and willing women with pit and leg hair... those were the days.

                    Thanks.

(BTW: Spider and RAH are the same person, just different bodies and fictions.)

Your welcome. I don't get to gatherings as much as I'd like these days, but last year it was here in NM, so I went and had a great time. You know Rob Savoy, the gcc coder, by an chance? He's the one that sets up the communications network at gatherings. Interesting hippie/open source crossover there.

                      You figured that out too?

  • it's great for collabing with the fam, keeping up with random friends, and lets you find out new things that you didn't know about before.

embrace it, love it, try it.

feel free to look me up on there, shouldn't be too hard to figure out one ID from the other...

Hehe, I know, I know, that's what they all told me. But just look at the other comments. I've lost geek cred and I know it. ;)

What really amazed me about Facebook was how it knew who my friends were. First stage of signing up and it's suggesting ex lovers, old friends, people I haven't seen in almost a decade. And that was before I let it riffle through my yahoo contacts. Kinda cool, kinda spooky...
