I may be a geek, but a lot of my friends aren't. I held off of facebook for a long while, but nearly every non-tech person I know is using it now. At least I never signed up for a myspace page.

To me, that seems like a problem that can resolve itself over time if ignored long enough. Eventually, facebook will whither away and die an irrelevant death. If you just ignore it, you can eventually become the first of your friends to not be on facebook, and then go back to using normal methods of communication.

Well, you just gave the reason I've stayed off those silly myface type of sites. But it didn't work. I ignored the hell out of spacebook, and the stupid thing is still there, with all my non tech friends and family on it.
But I guess I should be honest about the REAL reason I got on facespace. My wife and I have a polyamorous style open marriage. She's got this very cute history geek girl friend that she does theater with. I asked my wife if I could ask said geek-girl out, and my wife said yes, BUT, cute gee

All my family and friends know my cell phone number. They can contact me there and I'm content with that. If I have a picture I want them to see I post it on my website and tell them to find it there. Works extremely well for me :)

Adultery, to me anyhow, means cheating. It is the lying that is the problem, not the external relationship. My wife and I were monogamous for seven of our ten years together, and that worked for us then. But we both really enjoy deep connections with others. Polyamory is not swinging, it isn't about casual sex, it's about relationships. The idea is, we can love as many deserving people as we can find the time for. We've got our rules, and straying outside those would still be considered cheating.

Your welcome. I don't get to gatherings as much as I'd like these days, but last year it was here in NM, so I went and had a great time. You know Rob Savoy, the gcc coder, by an chance? He's the one that sets up the communications network at gatherings. Interesting hippie/open source crossover there.

Hehe, I know, I know, that's what they all told me. But just look at the other comments. I've lost geek cred and I know it. ;)
What really amazed me about Facebook was how it knew who my friends were. First stage of signing up and it's suggesting ex lovers, old friends, people I haven't seen in almost a decade. And that was before I let it riffle through my yahoo contacts. Kinda cool, kinda spooky...
