Gotta love the United States. Apparently Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX) was jogging and had a coyote go after his dog. He shot it dead with his trusty Ruger LCR. Ruger is now releasing a "Coyote Special" edition to celebrate this event. Only in America.
On a related note, I have some money set aside to buy a new firearm. I'm trying to decide if I want to buy a M1 Garand through the CMP or if I want to buy/build an AR of some sort. I've always wanted to own an M1 and the NRA high-power matches look like a lot of fun. On the other hand nothing annoys the anti-RKBA crowd more than an AR-15 with a few 30 round magazines. That's probably the wrong motivation to have when considering a four digit purchase, but there you go
I'll probably go with the M1, to the disappointment of all my friends with ARs. Hard to pass up owning a piece of history like that.

I kid of course. I've actually thought about buying the LCR. Little five shot .38 they recently came up with. I also have the GP-100. I could run over that thing with a tank and it would probably still shoot. Ruger is great.

I'd go with the M1 Garand, especially if your a history buff (WWII in particular). The AR-15 Bushmaster is nice, and can have a LOT of mods, but the M1 is adequate for home defense. Here's the proof.

I'll vote for the M1. When I get to picking up long guns that'll probably be one of the first I'll pick up. I still have a handful more pistols I'd like to pick up. That and I think I might need shoulder surgery before I shoot a rifle or shotgun much. Shooting with friends and even a handful of rounds with that and my shoulder is pretty banged up. Doctor says, no more monkeys jumping on the bed, er, I mean he says there are spurs or chips in the shoulder joint.

I only own two handguns but that's enough for me. Don't have a purpose for any new ones. I do need a rifle though.
Also going to be buying a shotgun, because I've decided to do my part to reduce the number of flying pests known as Canadian Geese.

Right now I just have two (or access to two also). My 9mm and my wife's 22lr. My 9mm is just not concealable, so before I go for my CPL I'll need another of some sort. And looking at the NRA pistol competitions it seems you need access to a 22lr and 45acp. So, unless I pick up a 45 as my carry gun, I'll need another one of those if I want to try to compete. And that is something I'd like to try doing at som

Yeah, they've ruined every park in my hometown. It's not just their droppings either -- they are downright nasty. I got hissed at by one of the bastards the last time I went jogging. I got the last laugh though -- nailed him with a rock before I resumed my run.
Anything is concealable with the right holster and wardrobe. I conceal carry a full sized 1911 in the summer months. I haven't been made yet. It's actually a better idea to carry a full framed handgun anyway -- you'll get more trigger time with

The obvious answer is... BOTH!
The CMP Garand will only cost a few hundred, so get that and then buy an AR-15 receiver and as many other parts as you can afford. Then over the next few months you'll have to find the money to buy the rest of the AR.
