Journal drinkypoo's Journal: Fuck you, AMD. 7
I have a Gateway netbook with R690M chipset and Athlon L110 processor. The latest driver for Windows 7 won't let me set scaling options, and I get no scaling at all when an app opens fullscreen. I can open the same software on the same hardware but in Wine (instead of Win7 x64) and I get scaling! Unfortunately, months have gone by but the open source video driver produces graphics corruption on this hardware, so I can't just run Linux (which doesn't have proper multitouch for Synaptics anyway, at least until Synaptics releases their driver suite to end users, assuming that should EVER happen.) And of course, I can't be SURE that I've got the latest driver, because AMD only provides drivers for my hardware to OEMs. AMD produced this hardware and supports it ONLY FOR VISTA, and they abandoned it between Vista and Windows 7.
I can no longer purchase any hardware from AMD because I cannot trust that they will support it.
Good-bye, AMD. I have bought all my CPUs from you and always made an effort to purchase systems with AMD processors when I have been in charge of purchasing decisions. You have shown yourselves to be untrustworthy. I'm done with you.

And really.. I wouldn't blame AMD for your woes. You bought hardware from Gateway, not AMD. They released it with the intent of supporting Vista. It supports Vista, and you chose to put a different OS on it. Not AMD's or Gateway's fault for that.

It's very specifically Gateway's fault, and more generally AMD's fault.
If you make a product and you've got drivers that will allow your customers to run more up-to-date operating systems, you should make them available to consumers of your product. It wouldn't cost AMD or Gateway anything to do the right thing. In digital music hardware, you commonly see companies release drivers for legacy products and make it clear that they are provided without any guarantees as to

Well, that's certainly much more eloquent than my title.
The center of my discontent is that you typically expect a chipset to support more than one operating system. AMD supported Geode better than this, and it was marketed not just as some sempron or something but as Athlon 64 and Mobility Radeon. When I get nVidia I know (these days) that I will be able to download drivers from nVidia and get going even if it's a QuadroFX.

I, too, thought you may have underutilized your vocabulary with that headline. Let's not forget to blame Microsoft for an irredeemable OS release that nobody would want to stick with. You took a bit of a risk buying anything with Vista on it.

NO, NO, A THOUSAND TIMES NO. The hardware vendor is responsible for producing the drivers. Normally when a new Windows comes out, a chipset still included in shipping products will receive drivers for the new revision. This has been the case for literally every PC I have ever owned long enough to go through a Windows upversion. Indeed, it has been the case with multiple AMD chipsets.
Unfortunately, AMD HAS NOT PRODUCED THESE DRIVERS. It is SIMPLY NOT POSSIBLE for Microsoft to produce these drivers for AMD pr
