I'm not sure what the point you're trying to make here is. Are you saying that if the protesters were armed that the police chief would have instructed deputies to use non-lethal force on them instead? The only thing that armed protesters would accomplish in this situation would be to justify the use of deadly force against them, in the case that things got out of hand.

Your title carries the invalid assumption that there is a difference between a republican and a democrat. While in some local jurisdictions that may be true, we all know thanks to President Lawnchair that at the federal government the two-party system is (at best) a ruse. Everyone working as a politician in DC today is a conservative - every last stinking one of them. If there was a single non-conservative left we would have never seen the giant health insurance bailout passed into law, and we might have been smart enough to not have invaded Iraq based on powerpoint presentations loaded with conjecture and outright lies.

The shotgun is the best Republican defense weapon on the market. Assuming you are using heavy bird shot (and go with birdshot B at least), the penetration through drywall is no where near as forceful as a slug. [boxoftruth.com] If angry Republicans make it into your house, it is tough to beat a 12 gauge for self-defense.

Furthermore, the .22 is no caliber for anything other than practice. Yes, it is affordable. But its rimfire design makes it inherently unreliable in comparison to a centerfire round. Worse, the .22 is simply not capable of creating the necessary hydrostatic shock for dealing with today's GOP terrorist menace.

If purchasing a rifle for Republican security, just buy a rifle. Don't mess around with a crazy pistol carbine. The new model Ruger Mini-14 are much more accurate than the old model with the thin barrel. They are more reliable than the foolishly designed AR models and the M-4 upgrades. The US Armed forced are even going back to the old garand action by reintroducing the M-14 rifle. And yes, the typical patriot would be better off with a 7.62 NATO than the 5.56 NATO.

In short, when dealing with Republicans, bigger tends to be better. The pistol caliber (and get a .357 revolver with a 6" barrel or a .40 S&W automatic or bigger) is useful only to get you to your longarm, be it the trusty shotgun or the patriot's rifle.
