Journal Daengbo's Journal: I'm Signing Off 9

I've come to Slashdot probably 340 days a year for the last eleven years or so. I used to get my news from it, but since Digg and now Reddit appeared, there hasn't been much point to that. Instead, I read the comments, which were filled with Goatse, Diarrhea trolls, and useless memes, but which had some really bright and insightful people posting.
The place used to be caustic, but donning a protective suit was worth it.

I don't get that anymore. As one poster put it yesterday, "Has Slashdot become Yahoo! Answers? Kill me now!" I totally agree. "There are no stupid questions" has replaced "Read 'How to Ask Smart Questions' or GTFO!" I liked the old way. Slashdot isn't a support forum where we need to have a code of behavior, is it? We're geeks: If you do, say, or ask something stupid, own up to it, learn, and move on.

Anyway, I'm one of the last few of the old guard from the '97-'98 era still frequenting this place (this is my second ID). I don't think I have it in me anymore.

Does anyone know a site where jerky curmudgeons like me sit around and discuss the news? I don't, and recommendations like Reddit don't really pass muster.

  • I understand... I feel the same in many ways. Thing is, I haven't found a good replacement at all and say what you want, the level of discussion on slashdot is still higher level than on most of the other forums I've seen. It's just the best of the worst.

However, if you find that mythical forum, drop me an email... :-)

That was exactly my point: where could I possibly go? Cheers!

      • I don't know... This place has become less "interesting", but I sometimes wonder if this has to do with my own evolution than with slashdot itself. You see, I learned a heck of a lot here, but sooner or later the "new" things become "old". Once you assimilated the knowledge you lacked, and nothing new comes in, a certain fun place becomes simply duller. I think that's what happened to slashdot, at least that's a partial cause.

I still haven't found a better place... I'm looking though.

I look at the front page - can't get to the stories/comments at work - and if I do chase it up when I get home I now find most of the stuff predictable with the occasional gem.

I do hang out at another forum but that is quite Australia specific and decidedly untechnical mostly.

Part of the problem might be that there is so much crap going down, reading it gets depressing and shooting the messen

Make sure you share the address.

  • Been here since it was called Chips N Dips. In a way I welcome the decline, because I've found it drains my productivity less, now. :) (Back in '99 it seems I was refreshing /. every 10 minutes or so.) I think the problem is just a generational drift; you and I have a different notion of slashdot etiquette that seems quaint to all the young whippersnappers who refuse to stay off our lawn.

  • It started drawing unwanted attention, especially from the spammers. The most noticeable turning point was the 'buyout'. After that it decided to seek out the ever lovin 'wider audience'.. leading to all the present day spam, which really clogging up the journal system. And product placement in the articles is ridiculous. Such is the power of money over a man's soul.

Multiply was/is apparently a popular alternative.. I went there only once and saw they don't even come close. Slashdot's only remaining saving

Do you remember Technocrat (was that its name? I'm talking about the Bruce Perens Slashdot clone that he started after the buyout)? How I wish that had stayed alive.

Anyway, I've complained about the content on Slashdot many times before, and I kept coming back, anyway. What kills it for me is the culture shift.

      • Do you remember Technocrat...?

Only because of Zogger, another cool cat who hasn't been around for a long time. Technocrat was the name. Now's it's just Bruce's blog...

        ...the culture shift.

Yeah, well, I blame the 9/11 BS for that.. damn near every discussion gets drowned out with that noise in one way or another... screwed up everybody's head..

Regardless what happens to Slashdot, the journals go a long way to make up for it.. Do try to stick around, and have a little fun with the punks out there in genpop.
