Journal Timex's Journal: Fate of Slashdot 12

I have to admit that I don't really bother with Slashdot much anymore. If I'm on Facebook, I read the front page stories from there and if I have anything to say about it, I comment on it there. What Slashdot was thinking when they decided to make that move is beyond me, but I don't see how it was anything remotely close to "beneficial".

I haven't had a lot of time to read Teh Circle. Sorry guys.

I have had time to fiddle around with Google Plus. :) If you need an invite, let me know. There seems to be an issue where if your email is configured to be hosted by Google Apps, you're SOL, but almost anyone else seems to be in business.

  • I didn't even know Slashdot was on Facebook. If there's one place I've been spending less time than Slashdot lately, it's Facebook. I check both two or three times per week. If I have some extra downtime, I'll browse the front page of Slashdot for a few minutes, but I've found the discussions aren't nearly as good as they used to be...and since I can get the news elsewhere a day or two sooner elsewhere, that doesn't leave much appeal for me with Slashdot anymore.

  • There was a time when slashdot was a destination. Now it's just a service station bathroom break on the way to a different destination - on a good day.

Between the updates that render the site unusable, the site moderators fancying themselves as overlords that show favor and disfavor to the users, the availability of better social networking sites and the [resulting] lack of posts here that used to be so plentiful this place is more or less a ghost town anymore. I stay here only for the front page and the oc

This! I very rarely come here anymore, which is kind of sad. Many of the /. types I communicated with regularly are on twitter, and that accounts for most of my communciations with Teh Circle remnants.

I have hopes for G+ but have been too busy to really get into it yet (although I do have some invites) Hopefully we can reconnect there!

      • ...technolust is coming to Portland tomorrow, finally going to meet him in person with peacefinder...

Never connected with peacefinder and had only brief (and sporadic) contact with TL. Glad the group is not entirely dead, either way. Hope a good time is had by all in Portland tomorrow! (And, the next time I am in WA for more than 2 days I will reach out and hopefully we can do something again.)

        • It would be great to see you again! I'm trying to see if I can put togather an East Coast swing next summer and hopefully see you this time :-) We'll see though, a lot of things have to come together first...

It ended up being a very cool visit and, just to be different, Portland weather cooperated with us for a change!
  • Remember when most of the Circle moved to Multiply? There's something of a coalescing migration over to Google+, now. I've got a Circle 'circle'...I'll make a JE; anyone who wants to add me (and let me know that they're looking for the Circle), I'll add to that Circle. And make a post for it so that folks can reconnect if they like.

    • That sounds awesome! I'm not on G+ yet, but hopefully will be int he next couple of weeks. Thanks!
      • Invites are pretty much immediately redeemable. Have been, for quite a while. Send me an email, I'll send an invite.

I've added you, GeckoFood, and Shadow Wrought to my circle. Look for my email indicating that I've added you. :)

I monitor the /. front page through Google Reader nowadays. I post only occasionally. Journals are an on-again, off-again kind of thing...on again, in recent weeks. Can't recall when I last posted one. I'm not posting to Multiply nearly as much as I used to, either. Maybe getting married has something to do with it. :-)

A girlfriend (from before I met my wife) got me started with Facebook. After a year or so keeping up with it, I think I'm checking it even less frequently now than /. or *. The relative

I've sent an invite for you. Let me know if you have any problems with it. :)
